I do not own Escaflowne or "Tonight and the Rest of my Life" sung by Nina Gordon.

It struck just as Hitomi's hand turned the key in her car's ignition. It manifested in her mind's eye, clouding her consciousness and judgment. The last vision Hitomi had occurred over three years ago, and this one was definitely making up for lost time.

Ahahahahaha....
Ahahahahaha....

Smells of fire and decay filled the air, a once lush landscape now a living hell. Even with all the chaos, Hitomi knew in her heart that she was seeing the destruction of Fanelia. Psychically searching for Van, she realized she was actually intertwined in soul with her beloved. She felt his desperation of his country crashing into rubble. She felt his sadness over the bodies of his people. And she felt his pain when he was shot down in mid-flight.

Down to earth I fell,
with dripping wings,
heavy things won't fly.

Hitomi screamed silently and hit her fists on the steering wheel, beeping the horn loudly. The thud of Van's bloody body slamming onto the ground resonated in sequence with the shattering of her heart.

And the sky might catch on fire
and burn the axis of the world.

Hitomi didn't notice she had been driving until her car sputtered to a halt. Ignoring the steam pouring out of the hood, she slowly opened the door and stepped out. Although it was already night out, the call of sea gulls and the crashing of waves suggested she was nearby the ocean. Knowing no reason for how she came to be there or why, she quietly walked to the shore, gravel crunching under her shoes.

That's why I prefer a sunless sky
to the glittering and stinging in my eyes.

An outline of a cliff appeared from the nightly mist, and Hitomi looked down, she could watch the water pummel the rocks below. Teetering on the edge, she spread her arms and closed her eyes, allowing the wind to whisper and caress her body.

I feel so light.
This is all I want to feel tonight.
I feel so light.
Tonight and the rest of my life.
Tonight and the rest of my life.

Taking a deep breath, Hitomi leaped into the air, memories of Van playing through her mind. She remembered how they had met, how their relationship had grown, and how she left Gaea on that fateful day.

Gleaming in the dark sea,
I'm as light as air,
floating there breathlessly.

The splash frightened away fish as Hitomi plunged to the bottom, bubbles escaping from her nose, her arms stretching towards the surface.

When the dream dissolves, I open
up my eyes and I realize that
everything is shoreless sea.
A weightlessness is passing over me.

Strong arms stopped Hitomi from sinking even further, jarring her eyes open. Through the murky water she could see warm auburn eyes and black hair. Making the mistake of gasping at her savior, salt water filled her mouth, causing her to panic. He began to worry, but somehow opened his wings underwater. They rose above the surface, flying into the midnight sky.

I feel so light.
This is all I want to feel tonight.
I feel so light.
Tonight and the rest of my life.
Tonight and the rest of my life.

Hitomi knew that her body was still in the ocean, but she didn't mind that she was no longer alive. She was with the one person that she held dear in her heart.

Everything is waves and stars.
The universe is resting in my arms.

Glancing up at the spirit holding her tightly, she whispered, "I love you, Van."

I feel so light.
This is all I want to feel tonight.
I feel so light.
Tonight and the rest of my life.
I feel so light.
This is all I want to feel tonight.
I feel so light.
Tonight and the rest of my life.
Tonight and the rest of my life.
