Character Development

"Habit is habit and not to be flung out the window by any man, but coaxed down-stairs one step at a time."-Mark Twain-"Pudd'nhead Wilson"
"Why is it that I have no past?! What did I magically appear on this show?! Did Abbie Carmichael just drop me off before riding into the sunset?!"
Everyone at the conference table looked around at each other. Then they all looked back at Serena. What were they to say?
"Serena," said Jack," you should have realized before signing onto this show that it really doesn't deal with the characters lives. It's about the case, the story, not the characters. If you had wanted character development you should have signed onto another show."
"The Counselor's got a point there, Counselor," said Lennie grinning.
Serena was getting frustrated by the moment. "You two can't talk. Look at Jack. He's had affairs with four of his ADA's. One he married and had a daughter with before getting divorced. A drunk driver killed one in that auto accident with Lennie. Jack's father was a Chicago cop who was physically and emotionally abusive until succumbing to cancer. We won't even mention the numerous times you have been brought in front of the disciplinary committee."
"And you," said Serena turning on Lennie, "You've got two daughters, one of whom was killed after testifying against her drug dealer, and you've got two-ex wives. You're also a recovering alcoholic."
Serena turned on Anita. "And you used to be in narcotics until you made Lieutenant by convicting an innocent man due to faulty fingerprint evidence. You got an on-going suit against the Department for promoting a white woman to Captain over you. You've got a husband and two sons. One on your sons has periodic problems with his computer and Lennie eats your fries!"
Lennie leaned over to Jack and Anita. "She makes these things sound like they're good."
Ed spoke up. "You have to remember that Jack, Lennie, and Anita have been on this show longer than we have."
Serna had Ed in her sights now. "You at least have a father, a slight gambling problem, and have used excessive force in the past!"
She turned to Nora. "You're from the world of academia and were introduced to Jack and Abbie by Rudi Guiliani!"
Serena threw her hands up in the air and wailed. "I have no past! I have no one! I have nothing! All the audience knows about me is that I used to hold my ex-boyfriend's cell phone in my purse. I'm doomed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to talk to the writers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I won't to speak to the writers!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The rest of the characters got up and shook their heads as Serena continued to rail at the ceiling. They started to pile out of the conference room.
"Well that went well," said Lennie sarcastically.
Jack just shook his head. "Don't worry. She'll get over. She just has to get it all out sometimes."
"Well don't let her come over to our side of the show too soon, Counselor. She might just kill someone to get some action for her character," said Anita.
"Don't worry," said Nora. "We'll watch out for her."
And with those words, they all parted company to continue to the next episode.
