My daemon and me are the best of friends. We can never be separated. At
least that is what I thought before I came here. My innocence was gone.
My roommate here is named Lyra. She sometimes calls herself Lyra Belacqua.
Or, other times, Lyra Silvertongue. In her stories that she tells us, she
even names herself as Lizzie Brooks. She is such an odd character! But,
never the less, I love her to pieces. She is like a sister. Once after
pestering her about where she came from, since when she was new here at
Saint Marie's, everyone dubbed her as 'M.G.' or Mystery Girl. So, M.G.
was an odd character, she kept to herself, rarely spoke, and didn't even
try to befriend anyone. That is how she was considered so, mysterious. I
decided that, since we were sharing a bedroom, I must know more about her.
So, she told me. She told me everything from the cupboard in the Retiring
Room of Jordan College and all the way up to her boy friend Will, and their
parting, and the Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass, and her altheiometer,
or whatever it is, a symbol reader, or some sort of Golden Compass. She
showed me that, but in the beginning when we first met. I saw her staring
at it and crying, and asked what it was, and what in the heck she was
doing, so I got my response. She showed me it, and told me what some of
the symbols mean and explained how it works, and how everything means
something. And, how each character, rather, picture, has multiple
meanings. That was probably the coolest of all, I might call it a fortune
teller. She 'tsked' me for saying that it was! Oh well!
Sure Lyra and I have our slight differences, but we are not like totally different. Both of us are orphans; she had many mixed feelings of her parents. If her stories are true at all, I don't blamer her. She couldn't say that either of her parents were particularly nice, her father killed her friend, and her mother tried to cut away her daemon, rather her mother's people. Her mother was the Head of something that Lyra says is now extinct, something called the General Oblation Board. She said that it was called the Gobblers by most people. Then again, Mrs. Coutler, her mother, did put her into the sleep that made her go and achieve the greatness that she needed to perform, to open a window from the land of the dead and the ghosts of people come back into the world. But, in the end, her parents died. Just like mine. My stories are just of some girl Dana who's parents died, while Lyra's are of Lyra Belacqua Silvertongue, friend of bear kings and boys of other worlds.
