Legolas has never had to deal with loss in his Mirkwood home. He grieved deeply when Gandalf died, but it all came rushing back when he learned of Boromir's fall. This is his feelings/thoughts near the end of the Fellowship of the Rings, when Boromir falls.
'Boromir is dead'
Aragorn said
And Legolas felt
A loss
A feeling he's never
Felt in his life
In his sheltered world
Of Mirkwood
He glances to the other two,
Aragorn and Gimli,
Tears roll down their dirt smudged faces
Shamelessly to the ground
He reaches up at the feeling of warmth
The touch of wet upon his face
He brings his fingers away in amazement
They are covered with Silver Elven Tears
