Breaking Gray
//
Gray was not her friend.
It fell across the concrete
In wicked splashes.
Uneven torrents.
Choked her. Mocked her.
Held her within as prisoner that she was.
Sometimes she would claw at it
With nails and fingers outstretched
Listening, smiling
in satisfaction
To the raw screeches she received.
Panting, laughing.
She declared victory.
But in the night there was no defense.
It closed in on her,
suffocated her essence.
And her chest would rise and fall raggedly
To the rhythm it drew for her.
And when the moon fell again
She went back to her work,
Tearing at it mindlessly,
As though possessed.
If only, she decided,
If only she could hurt it enough
She would be free.
All day she devoted herself to it,
to destroying it.
All night she belonged to it.
//end.
