Emerald Gaze

He stood tall and proud, looking at the crowd, his eyes reflecting nothing but coldness and boredom. He was indeed a striking figure, even more so than the handsome raven-haired man next to him. Yes, Kunzite was a magnificent figure indeed.
"Come on, Kunzite," Endymion said, as he led Princess Serenity towards the door. Kunzite followed, half a step behind his prince. They were announced, and entered the room, some of the people jostling to see the prince, his lady and the prince's guardian.
This ball was given by one of the Dukes of the Earth. Endymion went to most balls and festivities held by the Dukes and other important people. Accompanying him was always Kunzite, with occasionally Jadeite or Nephrite. And Princess Serenity was always invited when she was on Earth.
The ball will be no different than the others, Kunzite thought, repressing a sigh. All full of people wanting to dance with him and Endymion and Serenity, all lavishing him with admiration and adoration. Not that he disliked being admired, of course, but it got a bit monotonous.
The evening started, and, sure enough, it gave no indication of ever being different. Kunzite was the highlight of the evening. The prince would have been more sought after had he not had a princess already, but Kunzite was single. Every woman, and several men, desired dancing with Kunzite.
So. It would be a normal evening for Kunzite then. Dance with all the loveliest men and women and go home. Boring
Halfway through the evening, a young copper haired nobleman laughing with his friends was suddenly interrupted by a tap on the shoulder and a deep voice asking the pleasure of the next dance. Turning around, Zoisite looked straight at Kunzite. He raised his eyebrows at the guardian, then nodded, and gave him his hand, allowing himself to be led away by the silver haired guardian.
The dance commenced. Kunzite was silent throughout the dance - usual for him. Kunzite danced with whom he wished, but he never conversed with them. People who tried to strike up a conversation were usually answered with curt monosyllables. Zoisite too, was silent.
When the dance finished, Kunzite bowed over Zoisite's hand and straightened, intending to go and ask someone else for a dance. He had almost already forgotten Zoisite as he let go of his arm, when he locked onto his eyes. Zoisite's emerald eyes were curious and inquisitive, almost amused. Kunzite was taken aback, although outwardly not even a muscle twitched. Usually the glances he got were of adoration, not of inquisition.
Then Zoisite bowed back and moved off. Kunzite walked over to a pretty lady with blue eyes and green hair, asking her to dance. But during the rest of the party, Kunzite was haunted by emerald eyes. While dancing, he would brush against the sleeve of the copper haired boy, or he would catch a glimmer of emerald from across the room, even when Zoisite was not even looking at him.
But they did not dance again that evening. Kunzite never danced with the same person twice in an evening. But as he was leaving, waiting for Endymion who was helping Serenity into the carriage, he happened to glance up at a balcony. And caught sight of Zoisite.
Zoisite was not looking at him. He was staring at the stars. Then, just as Kunzite was about to look away, he looked at Kunzite, and Kunzite froze. He was unable to break away, to look away from Zoisite's eyes. Emerald eyes gazed deeply into silver eyes for a few moments.
Then Zoisite smiled, and faded away, a blizzard of cherry blossoms heralding his exit. Kunzite got into the coach, and rode away.
But he could not help wondering as he rode away. Who knew, maybe Zoisite would be there at the next ball.?
