Surprise!
"Oops," Duo said a little too loudly.
Wufei whirled around. "What do you mean, 'oops,' Maxwell?" he hissed.
"Uh... nothing, nothing, I can fix it." Duo quickly turned back to the lock. He'd been working at picking it for at least a minute before the lockpick went and broke. In the lock. This left Duo with half a pick in his hand and the other in the lock, rendering any technique he had almost useless.
"What'd you do?" Quatre asked.
"The lockpick broke. It's okay, I'll get it," he replied, getting aggravated.
"We've got twenty minutes," Trowa warned from his post at the end of the hallway.
Duo glared at the boys and turned back to his work. It took him at least three minutes to get the broken pick out and another two to unlock the door -- obviously not his best work. "All right, I've got it. Let's go." He and the others slipped into the apartment, closing the door silently behind them.
"Okay, you know what to do," Quatre instructed as they dispersed throughout the home. "Let's make this fast."
--*Twenty Minutes Later...
Heero wearily stuck his key in the lock and opened the door into his dark apartment. He'd been out all day, following a very mysterious trail all around town that didn't seem to have much of a purpose. In fact, it led him right back to Preventer HQ where he'd started, leaving him very tired, annoyed, and ready to shoot the next person who asked him to go anywhere. He dropped his keys onto the table he knew was to his right, and reached up to flick on the light.
"SURPRISE!"
"Wha?" Heero blinked several times, his eyes adjusting to the light and to the scene in front of him. There were balloons and streamers on his walls, Duo running up and hugging him, and the rest of his friends jumping out from behind furniture. A cake sat on his kitchen table. "What the heck is going on here?"
"Happy birthday, Heero," Duo grinned, tightening his grip around Heero's shoulders.
His eyes were wide as he slowly put his arm around Duo's waist, his surroundings still just registering. "Birthday? What the - ah shit. It is my birthday," Heero stammered, a sheepish look coming over his face as he ran a hand through his hair. "Wow. This is... wow. Thanks guys."
"It was all Maxwell's idea," Wufei said. "Happy birthday, Yuy."
Even Heero couldn't resist the urge to smile that afternoon. After all, it was the first proper birthday party he'd had that he could remember. All the annoyance he'd felt earlier was washed away by a sea of cake and laughter. He'd have to forget his birthday more often.
