Jim sat in the front room of the loft. He was listening to the soft, even breathing of his sleeping Guide. His Guide, his partner, his friend. And he'd almost lost him today - the only person brave enough, or more likely, naive enough to be his friend. A few more minutes . . . one event, one element happening differently could have cost him a friend.
It was odd. He only just met Blair weeks ago and had only tolerated the young anthropologist's presence because he needed control of his senses. And yet, there had been an instant connection - maybe it was this Sentinel/Guide business. Jim never had friends - not true friends. Friendship could get someone hurt and he could never bear to let himself be that vulnerable - till now; till Blair.
Jim's head jerked up as he heard Sandburg moan in his sleep, "No!" He winced, knowing that Blair was probably having a nightmare about this whole Lash mess. Jim had no doubt that he'd have more. He listened intently, wondering if he needed to go wake him up - away from the nightmare demon. Sandburg seemed to calm back down almost immediately, his breathing evening out again.
The kid had surprised him - he'd been in there yelling at Lash; was going to go down fighting. He remembered the relief and trust in Blair's eyes when he realized that Jim was there. Blair had known that Jim would win - there had been no question. Jim sighed. Sandburg didn't deserve to have nightmares because of that psycho. At least Jim had the satisfaction of having shot that piece of ****.
Jim sighed again and got up to check on Sandburg. Satisfied that Blair was safe, Jim headed to bed. He smiled as he remembered what Blair had said when Jim got back from killing Lash.
"Thanks Jim. Thanks for being there for me. Somehow I knew you'd come."
The faith and trust in that statement had made up Jim's mind - cop or not, Blair was truly his partner.
