scully had left him in an office where he didn't belong with a key chain and a kind remark. she left him in a strange world, clutching a piece of metal, cold like a fury in his hand. one key chain. it was of her world with aliens, monsters, men who kept secrets never to be told. she called him agent doggett, kept her coat, hugged him, walked out the door. as if she could walk out the door. as if she could just walk away.
pity was something akin to love. he would try to save her, try to save her world. the world she had been dragged into by a man born into that realm of darkness. she radiated light in this other man's life. in a world where it was okay to fall in love with your partner because, hell, he was your best friend. when she lost the dark haired, dark eyed, guess what he needs me, man she had turned to him. mr. agent doggett well i'll hate you love you let you come with me. i need you to help me pull my life together. let me pull you apart and down into this dark realm. just like he did for me.
the blond haired, young, agent women. they sent him a child to look out for. oh, hi, agent harrison, john doggett here. ready to have your life completely, absolutely, irrefutably, fucked up. so a fanatic child joined the party, and scully left a stranger in the office, to go to lamaze classes with that mulder guy who loved her more than anything in the world. that selfish bastard can love someone more than himself? well, wonders never cease. and, of course, in the end, it was tall, dark haired, dark eyed mulder that got to save blondie and lover boy's life. oh, hi, john doggett. i'm in love with that red haired, blue eyed woman who is in love with you. you know, the one with your child. the reason you're here. you'll give me a chance because she wills it. oh, and thanks for saving me while screwing yourself. by the way did you know how i hate you. just an aside.
john doggett fell in love with dana scully of the red hair, blue eyes, gibbous moon belly. she needed someone whilst pretending to need no one at all. least of all mr. bad ass non-believer. she was alone and brash and harsh. angry and undeniably beautiful. the kind of woman man fantasize about. and he was willing to pretend that he didn't realize as her shirts began to bulge. he fell in love with dana scully, maybe because he was weak and needy too.
he re-gifted, the re-gifted, all important and symbolic apollo 11 key chain out of selfishness rather than selflessness. because it reminded him of her. because it reminded him of them (her and the other man). because he could see it in her eyes. because it was never meant to be his.
now he is on the outside of the glass looking in. this is the way it will be now. the brown haired, brown eyed, other man is standing close to her. too close. they argue, they laugh, they keep their secrets. she was never his to have and it is all too much. walk away. because it is too easy. because she could do it to you.
