Bein' Gold
A Filk by Jennifer
I've been in a very Muppety frame of mind recently, digging out the tapes I'd made of classic Sesame Street episodes. It put me in the mood to create this little filk. (I'm actually considering doing a full-length parody called "Sesame Trek", the premise of which is that Paramount is so keen on spinning off Star Trek that they decide to spin it off into educational television. It'll be brought to you by the letter Q and the number 1, of course.) When I finish it, I'll post it, but meanwhile…enjoy this! It was easy to filk because of the rather free rhythm and rhyme of the original…which is, of course, "Bein' Green" by Joe Raposo, shown on (I think) the very first or second episode of Sesame.
(Data, sitting in his quarters, looks up to greet "us" with a wide smile.)
Data: Greetings! Commander Data of the Starship Enterprise reporting, and today we will discuss the color gold. You will notice that my skin is gold. (His smile turns sad…then slowly fades as the music begins.) It is gold because my skin is synthetic…bioplast sheeting. And when I look in the mirror, I am reminded that I am different from my friends because my skin is gold…you see?…
(Sings)
It is not easy being gold,
Knowing each day you are the only one who is,
When I think it could be nicer being pink, or yellow, or brown…
Or something much more humanoid like that.
It is not easy being gold…
It makes you look that much more synthetical…
It only tends to call attention to the fact that you are made of silicon and bioplast,
And not flesh and blood.
(Straightening up in his seat…)
…But gold is autumn ablaze…
And gold can be warm and sunshiny…
And gold can be brave, like a lion…
Or majestic, like a scepter…
Or sweet, like a bell.
When gold is all there is to be…
It could make you wonder why…
But why wonder? Why wonder?
I am gold…and it will do fine…
I like it.
And I think for me it is just as well.
(And the smile is back.)
So…what'd'ya think?
