A/N: Yes, it's another songfic from the Kel/Neal files. This one uses one
of my all-time favorite songs; I kept thinking about Kel when listening to
it, and I finally took action. Read and review!
Disclaimer: Tamora Pierce owns the characters, setting, etc. Jessica Andrews owns the song. What more can I say?

Kel walked out to the practice courts, ignoring the malevolent glares from Joren's cliché. They really have to come up with something better than greasing the floor, she thought, remembering how easily she had dodged the glistening tiles outside her door.
*I can stand with the weight of the world on my shoulders*
She picked out a practice sword and stood opposite her partner; Joren. He smiled viciously at her and slashed at her arm. She swung her blade up and around in one smooth motion, twisting the hand that held his weapon backwards. Before he had time to recover, she had knocked his sword to the ground.
*I can fight with the toughest of the tough*
Joren glared at her. "You will pay for that," he hissed.
Kel rolled her eyes and laughed silently. How will he fight? she wondered. With a wrist like that, he'll hardly be able to hold a staff.
*I can laugh in the face of all my insecurities
Anytime, anywhere, anything; I'm strong enough
But when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly, falling in love*
Kel was feeding her sparrows when there was a knock on the door. Neal walked in as soon as she opened it.
"Hello, Neal…what's wrong?" she asked, seeing the expression on his face and hoping the depth of her worry did not show in her voice.
"Nothing…well…I guess…there's a lot wrong, and you need to know it," he confessed, looking up at her.
"What is it?" she inquired again, stepping away from the birds and coming to stand before him.
"It could ruin our friendship,"
"Nothing can ever hurt our friendship, Neal."
*So let consequence do what it will to us
I don't care
Let the stars stand as witness to it all*
"Kel…" Neal sighed, then looked into her eyes. "I love you."
*Say the word and tonight I will follow you anywhere*
Kel stared at him. Her eyes brimmed over with tears as she whispered, "I love you too, Neal."
*I just can't pretend anymore
I'm too sturdy to fall*
Neal pulled her close to him, wrapping his arms tight around her. She let her tears fall onto his shirt, let the happiness she felt swallow up all reason.
*'Cause when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly, falling in love*
"You know what will happen if we're caught," Neal whispered in her ear. Kel blinked back another surge of hot tears.
"Yes, I do; and I don't care."
*I am not afraid, I am not afraid
Cause when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly, falling
I'm helplessly hopelessly, recklessly, falling in love*
