"Living, Breathing Miracle"
By Samurai Dusk
"There's no such thing as a miracle," she said, pushing away my outstretched hand.
"But, why, Juri-san, WHY don't you believe in miracles?" How could she not? She was a living, breathing miracle. Beautiful, smart, talented, everything I ever wanted to be but never was and probably never will be. And she didn't know that she herself was one of those that she so actively sought to disprove.
She turned away from me. "It would take a miracle..." She whispered to her herself.
"What?"
"Nothing." Quick. Cold. Just like her. But it wasn't just like her. I had see Juri before she became what she was then, so cold and withdrawn. A spirited, vivacious, amazing person who could do anything she set her mind to. What had happened to make her so bitter? No.....I knew. It was all my fault. If I hadn't stolen him from her...
"Gomen nasai, Juri-san," I said softly. "It's all my fault. I should have let you have him."
"I never wanted him."
"What?"
"I never wanted him," She repeated, cold and steady.
"But then..." I stopped, realizing. "Juri-san, what was it that you really wanted?"
Silence.
"Juri-san! Tell me!" I grabbed her shoulders and turned her back towards me. Her eyes were turned downward to the gold locket she held in her hand. "Let me see," I said, softly, gently.
She closed her eyes and let out a long sigh, as if she were about to make the biggest decision of her entire life. Then she reached up, unhooked the clasp, and handed it to me. She turned away again.
"Juri-san..." I whispered as I opened the locket and saw the picture of me inside. I suppose I knew it was me all along, but I never wanted to believe it. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"You think I could have? No....and I shouldn't have now."
"Juri-san...look at me."
She didn't turn around.
"Juri-san...look at me..." I again pulled her around to look at me, more gently this time. "You should have told me before..." I then leaned my head upward and kissed a living, breathing miracle.
And she made no move to disprove it.
