Summery: When T.J develops a crush on Ashley A., what's Spinelli to do?
Ashley Spinelli glared at the clock hanging from the top of the blackboard. Every second seemed to go by slower then the last. A LOT slower. She chewed the end of her pencil absentmindedly, adding to its collection of dents. Only five more minutes girl, she thought to herself. You can handle this…
A slurping sound made her spin in her seat. It was T.J and Vince, two of her best friends. They were shooting spitwads at the ceiling behind the teacher's back, and a few "badly aimed" ones hit the Ashley's, who were gigling about something. From experience Spinelli knew this wasn't a good thing, especially since they seemed to be staring at the two boys.
Spinelli caught their eyes and glared at every single one of them. Their giggles increased in volume, and Ashley A. flipped her perfectly styled blonde hair. Spinelli willed herself to calm down. There was only, what, three minutes of the school week left? How much trouble could they be up to?
*Ring*
Spinelli jumped a little in her seat. Ok, I miscalculated. Now I'm getting the heck out of here! She jammed her books and assorted loose papers into her brown bookbag and raced out the door. She was almost to freedom when she fell flat on her face, and jammed her arm into a nearby locker. The skin caught on one of the edges and a line of blood traced her elbow. She pulled herself to her feet and looked around to see her tripper. Who else but Ashley A. stood there, a smirk written clearly on her face.
"Watch it, Spinugly. You almost mussed my hair!" A hand flew to her head, showing off her neon pink nail polish. She stepped over Spinelli's bag and out into the bright sun. The other three Ashley's followed, each having her own "brilliant" thing to say. Normally Spinelli would have returned insults gladly, but she didn't feel up to it. And where were her friends?
She scanned the playground quickly, and almost died right then and there. Ashley A was being comforted by T.J, along with Vince. Spinelli's other friends stood by the sidelines, each having their own thing to do. Gretchan glanced her way, and the two exchanged knowing looks. The kind that only girls could give, the 'what does he see in her' kind.
Spinelli had known for a while that Gretchan had a crush on T.J. And to be honest, Spinelli had no problem with that. After the kissing experiment in fourth grade, Spinelli no longer had the "crush" on him. Not only could a relationship ruin the friendships with the gang and themselves, but T.J was a really bad kisser. Spinelli assumed it was from inexperience, but really. No one's THAT bad! At least, she hoped some boys were better.
Spinelli watched as Gus tried to hide the fact that he kept glancing toward Upside-Down girl, whom he had admitted to "liking" during the first week of school. They had caught him and Mikey writing poetry, about beautiful girls and dancing. Milkey had gotten over his love for his music teacher, and moved on to what he considered a more, "rewarding and radiant," goal. The Swinger Girl. Personally, Spinelli couldn't picture either one, "frolicking like captive lambkins in the beautiful sunset of the world."
Vince and T.J both "loved" Ashley A, and did nothing to try to disguise that fact.
Spinelli wasn't sure what it was with all the crushes in the air. It all seemed exteremly silly to her, and she was glad she was spared of it. The one crush last year on Baby Tooth was bad enough, she wasn't looking for a repeat.
Seeing how none of the boys were going to come to their senses any time soon, Gretchen waved Spinelli over and the two of them headed to Kelso's.
