Author's Note: Please R&R as this is my first fic. This is a short story about the traumatic night Dawn had just been through.
Dawn walked over to her bedside table where she left her personal diary. She picked it up and lay down on her bed like she did every other day. She flicked through the filled pages until she found one which was empty. She held her pen in her hand and hesitated. She couldn't write anything. But anyway, what would she write? "Dear dairy, my sister died tonight."
Dawn had to see it to believe it. She climbed down the tower thinking, "Buffy's strong. Buffy can get through this. She's... alive. Of course she is. Death can't get her. She already died before... but that didn't stop her from coming back. When I reach the bottom, Buffy's gonna be there... and alive."
But she was wrong. She wasn't. She was gone. Her body was still there; but Buffy was gone. Dawn's heart was ripped out of her body... for a second time. It was like some kind of sick de ja vu. She had to go through this for a second time.
Dawn just wished everything could be all different. All she wanted now was to see Buffy and her mother. She wanted them to be here; to take all this pain away which attacked her insides. It just wasn't her heart that was harmed; she couldn't breathe or think. In fact, nothing inside seemed to be working. It was useless trying; she felt as though she died right there next to her body.
But then somewhere inside she heard her voice. "You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world ... is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me." She knew what she had to do now. She had to keep living. For Buffy. It's what Buffy wanted. No matter how much it hurt, she had to keep on living. Just as Buffy said, it would be hard to live. But she had to deal. But there was just too much pain to deal with alone. When her mother died, she had Buffy to share her pain with, but now... she's gone. There's no one.
Buffy's voice distracted her from her thoughts. "I love you. I will *always* love you." And she just broke down. Dawn didn't have the chance to say that she loved her. She fell to her knees and instinctively covered her face with her hands. The tears just seemed to pour out of herself; emptying out her insides. She couldn't control it. She had to let it all out, although there seemed to be no point in doing so. The pain just kept coming back. And it hurt so much more.
All she wanted was to escape it all; for the pain to stop. And at that instant, Dawn just ran. It was like she couldn't control herself. She just ran.
Dawn didn't know if it was by coincidence or not, but she ended up at her house. Dawn walked in and glanced around the house. The sound of the door opening, footsteps and heavy breathing told her that Buffy's friends had followed her. "But this is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles ... tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I'm okay. And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other."
Dawn couldn't turn around and face them. Once the portal had opened, they all knew someone was going to die. And they had all suspected her; not their friend. She walked up the stairs and into her room. Here she stared at her diary; at the empty page beneath her. And she wrote one of the many things that troubled her: "Buffy bestowed upon me life. And in return, I gave her death." She closed up her diary and lay there; crying herself to sleep.
