Prologue

Darkness is a cloak, which once borne, cannot be shrugged away. It doesn't fall to the floor with a whispered sigh, midnight tinted silk flowing into a disheveled heap. It wraps the wearer in a cocoon of such thickness, such knotted, and twisted ties, that is must be shouldered for all eternity. The world is blind to those who creep about in the murky confines of the dark, and the wearers in turn are shunned to the world. Truly of another place, another time, another realm of existence. Forever bound in the seclusion.

Demon eyes stilled in this darkness, eyes fixed on the lone figure in all this foreign world that saw through the cloak, is not blinded by the world, sees in the midnight sky. She laughed like them, those of the other world, alive and vibrant, her human step carrying an excited bounce, as she stepped through night, closer towards the wearer of the cloak. Yet her life filled step was not alone. It kept pace with another. Another child's footsteps. A brother in darkness.

Demon eyes shied away, watching in silent reverie through the black laced sky, shimmering stars, light, out of place in this dark reality that is the night. Through the hooded cloak they peered at the walkers, the one meant to see them, and the one meant to be one of them. And the demon eyes shuddered and convulsed in fear. Not of the one meant to find them, see in the blindness, hunt them in their eternal cloaks of darkness. No, they trembled in fear of the brother, the fellow wearer, he who too bore the weight of darkness.

They passed unawares, and the demon eyes emerged once more, following them in their easy gait. Following them in eternal night.
