"Belinda's Visit"
Jamie sat up in her bed, taking slow sips of orange juice and chewing on a raisin bagel. All her motions were slower than a few months before, but her color was back. Her bangs were swept to the side and her long legs stretched out in front of her. Her toes tapped slowly to a mixed tape Landon made for her. Her bible was open beside her to the middle of 1 Corinthians and she glanced at it in between bites. She spent an hour or two in the morning by herself, and spent it in many different ways. Yesterday, she finished "Catcher in the Rye" and was taking a break before she would start "As I Lay Dying." Landon went to see his father and Jamie's father was downstairs, working on a sermon.
Jamie finished her bagel and orange juice. She crumbled the napkin and aimed to make a wastebasket shot. It bounced off the rim of the basket and went in. Jamie smiled. She picked up her bible and put it in her lap. As she did so, she heard footsteps at the door. She looked up, expecting Landon to be at the door, but instead, it was a girl; Belinda. Jamie smiled and motioned her to a chair next to Jamie's bed. Belinda smiled as she walked to the chair and smoothed down her skirt before she sat down.
"What brings you here?" Jamie asked as she put her orange juice glass on her bedside table.
"Look, Jamie, I wanted to apologize for doing the flyers," Belinda said as she tried to avoid Jamie's eye contact. "It was wrong and I'm sorry."
"I forgive you," Jamie said.
"Easy as that, huh?" Belinda smiled as she sat back in her chair.
Jamie scooted down so her head was on the pillow. "Yes. Once you ask for forgiveness, you are forgiven."
"Why have you always been so nice to me?" Belinda asked, put her fingers through her hair.
"I would rather be nice to people than angry and bitter," Jamie said as she wiped a hair away from her face.
"I guess I've been bitter toward you," Belinda said.
"Why?" Jamie smiled, as she kept her eyes on Belinda. She wouldn't look Jamie in the eye.
"You have Landon now," Belinda said. "When you walked into his life, I was trying to win him back. You had that quality that he was looking for and it wasn't in me. I always admired you, Jamie, but I've never been jealous of you before."
Jamie said nothing as she took Belinda's wrist and gently pulled her from her chair. Jamie sat up and wrapped her arms around Belinda's back. Belinda responded and put her arms around Jamie's thin body. "Treat him well. He deserves it."
