Remember Me

Darkness.

Darkness swirled and danced all around Link as he fell into the dream, out of reality and into the unimaginable. His dreams were always filled with crazy monsters, insane villains, and beautiful princesses, but none had ever been like this. Or at least, none that he remembered.

He seemed to be falling forever in eternal blackness that was oblique as night. He wasn't even sure if a star could ever pierce the darkness of it, for it was so thick that he could not even see his hands. The fall was longer than any dream he had ever had, he was sure, although Saria had told him many a time that dreams are only for a millisecond in our sleep. Our minds are constantly changing the subject and the ones we do remember only had a mere significance with each other, or so she had said. But now, with this much falling going on, he was sure that this many dreams could not have had him in complete darkness, and in this many dreams Epona could not have toppled him off a cliff.

He sighed heavily, for he feared he would never reach the bottom and would grow old and die before ever even beginning the real part of his dream.

After what seemed like a lifetime, he finally landed softly, almost like a feather touching gently on the ground, before a shining white light. With a desperate thought, he concluded that he still must be falling somewhere, but now he had died and was going into heaven… or…

The light seemed to move toward him, fluttering on gentle wings… dancing on the water that was the darkness and coming ever closer.

A part of the lighted ball took form and reached out a hand to him. He took it gently, and the light dimmed.

"Link…"

The whisper was so silent that it could hardly be heard above the deep trill of the darkness that enveloped them. The light took more form, and was now a girl shining like silver with graceful wings.

"Do you know who I am, Link?"

He shook his head in a negative reply. A sigh was all he could hear.

"It's me, Link. Navi."

The name hit him like a brick in the nose. Navi? How could she be as big as…

"I don't have much time… you will wake up…" she said in a deeply saddened voice. He could see her eyes, they where glazed with tears.

"How…?" he began, but she raised a finger to his lips.

She leaned in close to him and gently… ever so gently… kissed him. It was short, like the one perfect breeze that only comes once in a lifetime, and if you don't get your kite up then… you never will. Navi pulled away slowly.

"I love you, Link," she whispered, her eyes still closed.

"I… I…" he began, but again she stopped him.

"Good bye…Link…" she said, tears streaking her cheeks and gathering in her eyes.

"Navi…"

He was jerked out of the dream with a start, like lightning striking you in the heart. The darkness fled from all around him, accompanied by stars and then sunlight beaming through the darkness.

He awoke in the same place he always awoke, in the tree house where once… long ago… Navi had woken him up to start a journey that would last him a lifetime. He sighed and stared at the ceiling.

"Will you always remember me?"

He turned abruptly toward the door, to see the little fairy, now tiny and familiar fluttering about his door- way. A smile graced his face.

"Forever."

With that the fairy flew out of the hut, toward the forest, and into the sunlight to embrace her new adventures.
