Birthday Blues

Authors Note: I don't know Roswell very well, but this is dedicated to my sister on her birthday. She's the biggest Roswell fan (most especially Maria and Michael fan) I know. Happy Birthday:)

"So we'll go no more a-roving so late into the night/Though the heart still be as loving,/And the moon still be as bright,/For the sword outwears its sheath,/And the soul outwears its breast./And the heart must pause to breathe/And love itself have rest."-Lord Byron-"So We'll Go No More A-Roving"

Maria was angry. As she walked quickly to her car after her shift at the Crashdown, any stranger on the street could tell she was angry.

When she reached her car, she pulled her car keys out of her alien apron pocket. She then gave her front tire a swift kick and as the pain shot up her leg, she instantly regretted the action. Maria leaned her body against her car and let a small sigh escape her as the shooting pain in her foot began to subside.

How could Michael have forgotten her birthday?

Sure, they were broken up, but they were still friends. All day she had worked with him and he had said nothing. What had she been thinking any way? It wasn't like he had been good remembering dates when they had been a couple, why would them being broken up change that? Maybe she should have dropped more hints?

With another small sigh of frustration, Maria unlocked her car and got in. She started up the engine.

She shouldn't be upset with Michael. It wasn't as if everyone had forgotten about her birthday. Her Mom hadn't. And Liz and Maria were going out tonight to celebrate. It didn't matter that Michael hadn't remembered. But somewhere deep down, Maria knew it did matter.

Suddenly something caught Maria's eye. She turned to look at the passenger seat where a bouquet of beautiful yellow roses was laying with a card.

After Maria got over being stunned, she quickly picked up the roses and breathed their scent in deeply. Their fragrance was wonderful. Excited, Maria quickly opened up the card and read, "To my best friend, Maria-Happy Birthday-Love always, Michael."

A smile grew on Maria's face, which had started from her heart. He had remembered after all.
