1 In the End

Shounen-ai and spoilers for episode 48 of Gundam Wing (sub or dub). Angst too… and yes, the title is a reference to the Linkin Park song of the same name.

Gundam Wing etc belongs to it's respective owners…

"Anytime there is only one justice

The one in the hands of the victor"

- 'Soldiers of Stardust', Treize Khushrenada's image song

The explosions were eerily silent, all noise sucked up by the vastness of space. A strange war, where the only noise was your own screams echoing inside your own head. The silence was almost as terrible as the bloodshed, almost seeming to negate the act of killing, almost…

Treize considered all of this while deftly avoiding the blow aimed by his opponent. It was a strange duality that allowed the leader of the World Nation to strike back at another hapless soul while considering the current state of affairs.

Perhaps if he'd done things differently then they wouldn't be here now. Perhaps if Une hadn't suffered from her terrifying split personality, if Wufai hadn't challenged him, if Zechs hadn't…

Zechs, no, he was Millardio now. Millardio Peacecraft, leader of White Fang. Hell bent on destroying the world, proving once and for all the tragedy of war. Treize smiled to himself, he would die, loose himself to eternity and yet his beloved would teach humanity the lesson that he had failed to.

There was another silent explosion as his opponent tumbled into oblivion. Another appeared. Treize waited, timing his counter attack, humming Dido's lament inside his head.

"When I am laid in earth

Will you remember me"

But he wouldn't be buried, lost to the vastness of space. A rotting corpse in a redundant heap of metal, or perhaps just charred ashes… Did corpses rot if there was no atmosphere?

Another victim dispatched and yet another appearing.

Where was Zechs? Would he die by Zech's hand in the end or would it be one of the Gundam pilots? Would it really matter at all?

This opponent was slightly better than the last, surviving longer.

As long as this war served it's purpose it didn't matter. All that mattered was the cause, not OZ's world domination as many supposed but proving to all that this was wrong. That war was terrible and despicable, the taking of another human life the highest of crimes. That it should stop, there should never again be violence wreaked upon humanity by humanity.

Another blow blocked, another countered.

It didn't matter, he'd been prepared to die from the moment everything had been set in motion. Didn't change anything… perhaps even this, everything that had been planned wouldn't change humanity's failings. If only this lesson could be learnt then everything else that he'd ever failed to do would be irrelevant. If only… then perhaps heaven would forgive him, perhaps Zechs would too.

Suddenly there were two mobile suits in his vision.

Two against one? That's hardly sporting… Zechs would never… Stop thinking about Zechs! There's a war to be fought and lost. No, not lost, not by the World Nation forces, only by him.

A third mobile suit.

Now this is just silly. Why don't they just drop the Libra cannon and have done with it!

Two explosions, a pause, then a third. A distinctive mobile suit appearing.

Wufai. Of course, Wufai would kill him.

The fight is brief.

No famous last words. Only for Millardio, my Zechs.

I was having a Gundam angst moment. Poor Treize, his boy-friend's trying to blow up the Earth and his only other option is a chauvinist Chinese kid.

I guess this one's for Burmese Zechs, the sidekick who takes my blank CDs, can't cook without my help and always owes me money. Still, OZ'd fall apart without ya!
