Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

Now I lay me down to sleep.
She pulled the brush through her auburn hair one last time before setting it down on the dresser. Kneeling at the side of the bed, she prayed.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
She turned off the lights and slid into the pink sheets of her canopy bed. At age 16, she was naïve and unaware of the darkness outside.
And if I die before I wake,
The swoosh of cloaks echoed through the all but empty house. Then the screams that no one else could hear followed by the silence. There could be only one reason for the silence that was more horrifying then the tortured yells.
I pray the Lord my soul take.
Guide and guard me through the night.
And wake me with the morning light.
The sun rose over the silent hills, and the clouds poured down their rain in sympathy.
