"How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways"
By Bibidibobidiboooo
"Inuyasha!" Kagome's smile was wide and bright as she looked at Inuyasha. "Do you know how much I love you?" She looked up at him expectantly, waiting for him to reply.
Inuyasha stared down at her, smiling softly. "How much, Kagome?"
"This much!" She cried happily as she spread her arms as wide as she could. She giggled and spun around until Inuyasha caught her up in his arms, laughing as well.
"Do you know how much I love you back?" he asked. She shook her head, a little out of breath from the little romp. "I love you this much." He spread his arms wide open too, and she giggled happily, spreading her arms open too.
After a moment, Inuyasha noticed her smile turn down at the corners, a look of sadness moving over her little features. "What's wrong Kagome," he asked worriedly, hating to see her so sad. He knelt down so that his golden eyes were level with her soft brown eyes.
She bit her trembling lip, as she looked up at him through her lashes. "I don't love you as much as you love me," she said in a quiet plaintive voice. She took a hand in each of her own and spread his arms apart again; she couldn't reach far enough for his arms to be fully spread. "See," she said sadly. "I can't reach as far as you."
He chuckled softly, making Kagome suddenly look up at him with hurt in her eyes. "Kagome," he said gently. "It doesn't matter how much love you can give me." She looked up at him now with confusion in her eyes. He continued, "I'm only happy that I can give you my love."
He watched as the smile spread across her face again, and laughed as she now grabbed his hand again with both of hers, pulling him along to show him the pretty flowers she had seen along the dirt path, all the while chatting happily.
And though he nodded as she pointed at this flower and that, he couldn't help but think of what she had said, how she couldn't give him back as much love. And then he thought of her mother, the one woman who had truly understood him. He thought of how much he missed her, how much he had loved her. And with sorrow now in his eyes, he finally thought of how she had been the one to give him more love than he could ever have possibly returned.
He stared down at the bright giggling girl dragging him around in that little patch of flowers, and he smiled to himself, a soft smile not only of sad memories but also of fondness and contentment. Now was his chance to show just how much love he was capable of.
Did you like it? If not, I think it could stand alone as a one shot, no? :)
Otherwise, just to let you know, the rest of the fic will be about what happened before this moment. :D
OR maybe it should be about what happens after this moment??
Okay, decisions decisions!!
