You Could Have Been Mine

A tall man sits looking out the window, the sky a darkened gray as a storm crept up. He sits thinking about a love from the past. A red-headed beauty whom he couldn't have. Lily. He sits staring at a waving portrait in his hands. He thought about the man who stole the woman away from him. James. The perfect Head Boy Quidditch player who played the position of Seeker. Just like his son. A son that could have been his. A memory flashed across his mind.

~*~*~Flashback~*~*~

"Hello Lily," Severus whispered in a low voice.

"Hello Severus," Lily said, smiling at him.

"I wanted to ask you-" He began.

"Tiger-Lily! Oh, Lily! Where are you?" Seventeen-year old James called out.

Severus raised an eyebrow. "Tiger-Lily?" He asked warily.

Lily smiled. "James' nickname for me," She replied. She turned her head and called back, "Over here James!"

James spotted Lily but stopped when he saw who she was with. He took a step closer.

She waved to him and turned back to Severus. "What did you wanted to ask me?"

Severus looked over her shoulder before proceeding. "I wanted to ask you if you would like to go to the Graduation Dance with me?" He looked into the emerald orbs that could drown anyone.

Lily looked surprised. "Oh, well, um, I would love to but James already asked me." She looked down, blushing.

"Oh. Well then," Severus said in his cold voice, glaring at James who smirked.

"Severus-" Lily began, her voice at a pleading edge.

"I have to go. Sorry to have taken up your time, Lily," Severus muttered before he stalked off towards the entrance to Hogwarts, purposely bumping into James on the way.

James came over to Lily and put his arms around her. "Well, that was interesting."

Lily glared at her boyfriend. "James!" She looked back, but Severus was gone.

~*~*~End of Flashback~*~*~

Severus sighed, tracing Lily's facial figures with his thumb, remembering the painful memory that would haunt him for all eternity. He got up, placed the portrait in a safe cabinet, preparing for the day's lessons. He dreaded the fact that the husband of his once true love was to be in his first period. It's all James' fault. Lily would have still been alive if it weren't for him, Severus thought darkly. He took a last look at his beloved and shut the cabinet door, shutting out the painful memories of her with it. He walked out to teach his class and was caught in the son's emerald orbs that were the replicate of Lily. Orbs belonging to the beauty that could have been his.
