1 Long Black Veil

He looked down at her…watched, as she looked back at her husband asleep on the bed. She pulled on a long black dress and the long black veil that would hide her face from all sight.

Ten years ago on a cold dark night

Someone was killed beneath the town hall light

There were few at the scene, but they all agreed

That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me

She walks these hills in a long black veil

She visits my grave when the night winds wail

Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

They couldn't help it. She loved her husband…he was her savior, her hero, his best friend. But as much as she loved him, her passion for another was just as strong. No one would have guessed that the looks they gave each other would have been consummated. No one could predict the love that they would share, or feel that night…. no one could predict the murder at the site.

The judge said "Son, what is your alibi?

If you were somewhere else, then you wont have to die."

I said not a word, though it meant my life,

For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife.

Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil.

She visits my grave when the night winds wail.

Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

The witness didn't know a damn thing…just that he had long blonde hair just like me. He didn't know a damn thing…but then again that was the beauty wasn't it? No one knew a damn thing was going on…not my best friend who had gone out of town, my family who couldn't reach me at the time…no one but me and her and the love of a lifetime that we shared that night.

Oh, now the scaffold is high, eternity is near

She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear

And sometimes at night when the cold winds blow

In a long black veil she cries over my bones.

She walks these hills in a long black veil

She visits my grave when the night winds wail

Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

It was murder on the first…a crime punishable by death, in his minds eye he could see her…eyes dry as she held on to her husband who wept at the announcement… His best friends arm wrapped around her tight, his head pressed against her shoulder as he tried to hide his tears…inside he was hurting to see his love in another's arms…the arms of a man who loved him enough to cry, while she shed not a tear…. his mind scattered…in his mind voices erupted in a chorus of noises, but all he could see was her…her face, her sweet lips, her hair as she tucked it beneath her ear.

Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil

She visits my grave when the night winds wail

Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.

Now she visits him from day to day…still wondering what could have been and what would have been. But I…I think to myself…Jeff's the best friend a boy could get.

Nobody knows. Nobody knows, but me.

Nobody knows but me.

Even in death I feel the guilt…as she wipes the tears that form in her eyes, I know what we did was wrong…but how could something so wrong feel so right? I guess I'll never know…but as I watch over her from the heavens high above I hear her whisper my name…as she whispers over and over again, "Oh Shannon I'm so sorry."
