Spoilers: The Wish

Nick O' Malley had an idea. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not. It seemed like most of his ideas turned out to be bad ideas. So he had planned this one out in advance, very carefully, plotting out every way that this plan could backfire.

So far he had only found thirty-seven ways that this idea could ruin his life. Not bad.

Kate, as usual, was having a difficult time with romance. Ever since their little discussion about being "pro-or-anti relationships" she had become increasingly sullen about her luck in love. It seemed like no matter where she looked, she couldn't find the man of her dreams. He had to be smart, good-looking, have a great sence of humor and of adventure, and have good relationships with his coworkers. (Okay fans, bang your head against the wall and say "Duh" HERE.) Every one of her "good" dates turned about to be scuzzy, links, or, worst of all, married. Nick just wanted to cheer her up. So he bought one single rose. It was yellow. He wasn't sure if she liked that color, but he figured it would be safer that way. You can't get anything scary or innapropriate from yellow. Friendship: perfect.

In retrospect, he decided that the entire thing was a bad idea. He shook his head, sighing. He tossed the rose in Kate's garbage, face down.

Kate was, indeed, having a horrible day. Her date last night had been a disaster. It seemed like she would never find a man who was fun to be around, who she was always comfortable with, and who was delightfully boyish, yet always knew the right thing to say when she was depressed. (Bang, "duh", repeat). It seemed like life had given her a great big raspberry.

But when Nick went to see how his partner was doing, she had a terrific smile on her face, and energy to spare. "Good date last night?"

"Date?" She had forgotten. "Oh, no, it was horrible. In fact, I've been having a bad day since I got up. But a few minutes ago, the neatest thing happened." She moved, and Nick could see the rose sitting in a mug on her desk. "Can you believe I found that in the garbage? It's so beautiful, why would anybody throw it away? Anyway, I really don't care. I feel like it was put there just for me to find- like it's some kind of sign that things will be okay." She paused. "That sounds really stupid, doesn't it?"

Nick grinned. "Nope."

Kate felt better. He always knew what to say.
