Didnt see it coming...
Disclaimer: All these belong to Fox and 1013 people. There are no characters of my own in here because I have no imagination – just the 2 I have stolen from Chris Carter
Summary: Ok, don't get me wrong. I love Mulder but this came to me after I watched Closure for the first time like last year and I've only just got around to actually writing the damn thing. I love that episode, but I like my ending too…
=================================
Mulder walked slowly into his apartment. The days events had left him drained, both physically and emotionally. Sleep had been kept at bay on the journey home by the incessant visions of his sister. She had looked so happy. And now he was alone.
He smiled sadly. He had been right after all. Samantha had been taken by aliens, only she had been returned to be intercepted by the CSM. He had killed her – no, that wasn't true, in her diary she had spoken of running away but she had died. And if it wasn't for the CSM, she still be alive.
He rested his head back against the couch, closed his eyes and sighed. For the first time in 28 years he knew the truth. He knew what had happened. And for the first time in 28 years he was truly alone. Fox Mulder, the last of the Mulder clan. He had nothing, no mother, no father, no sister. All he had was his work…and Scully.
A tear rolled down his cheek as he thought of his partner. His rock. His constant. His touchstone.
Flashback:
SCULLY: Like your sister. Mulder... You told me that all you wanted was for this to be over.
MULDER: (looks at her) I do. ... I do.
SCULLY: Well, then I'm going back to Washington. There's nothing more to be done here.
(SCULLY is calm, rational, and gentle. Perhaps she is expecting that he will follow her. MULDER nods. She walks down the hall.)
--------------------
MULDER: This is 1979. She's 14 years old here. 14 years old.
(MULDER turns the pages to later entries. SCULLY watches MULDER.)
MULDER: (reading) "Sometimes I think my memories were taken by the doctors but not all of them. I remember faces. I think I had a brother... with brown hair, who used to tease me. I hope someday he reads this and knows I wish I could see his face for real."
(MULDER turns a few more pages, skimming them.)
MULDER: And then, uh... she's, uh... talking about running away. She wants to run away so that they stop doing the tests. And then it just stops.
------------------------
MULDER: He's dead. They're all dead, Harold. Your son, Amber Lynn, and my sister.
------------------------
SCULLY: Mulder, what happened? Are you sure you're all right?
MULDER: I'm fine.
(MULDER looks up at the starry sky, and sighs.)
MULDER: I'm free

End Flashback
"I'm free…" Mulder whispered to himself in wonder. The feeling was strange to him, and for the first time in 28 years he believed it. He smiled.
*******************************************************************
Scully swore in frustration as she tried to get in touch with Mulder.
"This is Fox Mulder. Leave a message"
"Mulder its me. Look, I don't know where you are, or if you're asleep…if you're there pick up. I want to know that you're ok…look. I'm coming over Mulder. Ill be there in 10 minutes." Scully snatched up her car keys and ran out of her apartment, she knew she should have talked him into staying at hers…
Scully stared up at the dark ominous building that was Mulder's apartment block. His light was off, but she could see a faint flickering glow coming from the TV. She went upstairs.
She didn't expect to find his door locked.
She didn't expect to have to use her key.
She didn't expect to see him on his couch.
With a bullet in his head.
She didn't see it coming.
