SHADOW STALKERS, an Evangelion fanfic by Vane J. Dolenc
The rain was coming down hard, it and the thick clouds overhead making
it all but impossible to see anything in the dark, sleeping city. It was
very late, and only a few windows were illuminated in the entire metropolis.
The heavy fall of rain was the only sound audible throughout the city,
sometimes interrupted by deafening thunder. For a brief instant, lightning
would illuminate the entire cityscape in an eerie flash of white, then all
would be dark again. Suddenly, a new sound could be heard over the rain and
thunder. It was not unlike the thunder, quieter but more persistent, one clap
occurring about every two seconds. With each clap, the ground shook slightly,
causing concentric circles of tiny waves to form on the numerous puddles of
water. In the dim light coming from one of the windows, a dark shadow became
discernible, as tall as a 20-story skyscraper, slowly moving through the city,
sometimes pausing, looking around corners carefully, hunting, stalking. With
each step it took, the ground shook and the sound of its foot striking the
asphalt could be heard over the rain. The dark shadow crept through the city,
stepping over parked cars, circling building, all the while avoiding open
spaces, staying in the shadows of tall buildings. Just after it passed an
alcove formed between three skyscrapers, a flash of lightning illuminated the
alcove, and inside, crouching, unmoving, was a second shadow, a gleaming purple
giant, in the brief flash looking as a giant form of the Devil himself, with a
horned head adorned with an evil grin and yellow, glowing eyes. Immediately the
purple demon raised its head, and, standing on all fours, looked after the
first figure, already moving to the next group of buildings. In a new flash of
lightning the first figure was illuminated also, the light revealing it to be a
similar demon, this one colored a bloody red. It was still moving slowly and
cautiously, as if it was aware that it was not alone in the city, but did not
know where its nemesis was. Suddenly, the purple monster leapt, charging after
the red demon with a terrifying roar which shook the glass of every window in
the city. The red figure turned around swiftly, tried desperately to deflect the
oncoming blow, but to no avail. The attack connected while the red form was
dangerously unbalanced, and with a ground-shaking clap it landed on its rear,
sparks flying where the red armor scraped across the asphalt. The purple demon,
standing menacingly over red's defenseless form, chuckled lightly.
"Tag, you're it!" yelled Shinji just before he nudged his Eva into a fast sprint
down the motorway. The red demon got to its knees, Asuka's voice booming loudly
from the external speakers:
"Just you wait, Third Child, I'll get you yet! You and your precious Wonder girl!"
Unit-02 sprinted after Shinji, but suddenly a blue armored leg shot out from behind
a large apartment building. The red Eva tripped over it and landed squarely on its
face. Before Asuka could get up, Unit-00 ran down the motorway, Rei's voice echoing
over the loud German curses coming from Unit-02:
"Shinji-chan, wait up!"
