Fortune's Fool
I am fortune's fool, said Romeo.
I know the feeling. So am I.
Fortune used to smile on me,
the golden boy, rich handsome, talented.
I had it all, including Max.
Everything is gone now, including Max.
My legs went first, taken by
an assassin's bullet, but I had Max.
Then my money, sacrificed to right a wrong.
Yet I could still carry on because
I had Max by my side.
But the distance between us grew,
thanks to Manticore's machinations.
We could not close it, try as we might.
Max was there, but no longer by my side.
The night my penthouse was destroyed,
I thought I had her back,
my personal cat burglar.
But then she ran again –
to Terminal City –
to Alec.
I can live with my losses –
except for Max.
Fortune has turned her back on me
and made me her fool.
