Serenity took a deep breath as she sat down into the deep
folds of a large, plush seat within her private quarters. She turned
to Mars, who was standing, deferentially, to one side of the room.
"Must we view this?" Serenity turned away as she lifted her
knees underneath her chin. "This is.... This is so...."
"It was her request that we watch. It was her request that
all watch. And it was a heartfelt request, one we could not ignore."
Mars strode up to Serenity's side, placing a hand on her Queen's
shoulder.
"I understand that, but...." Serenity looked up at Mars,
sadly. "I hate these things. You know I do." Mars closed her eyes
and nodded. They both then turned as a large screen started to
descend from the ceiling. Upon it was the picture of a pale-skinned
young woman, with golden hair, dressed in golden robes....
----o
Miss Gold held out her arms to the view of Crystal Tokyo
below. Atop the highest tower in the city, bar the palace, she
readied herself for her big moment, where she would astound all
amidst the pomp and excitement of the Festival of Foundation. The
foundation of the New Kingdom, and the birthday of the new peace.
She smiled at the irony of that. Peace, finally, peace.
Many long hours of preparation were about to be rewarded as
the sun disappeared below the horizon, allowing the city to glow its
full glory into the dark sky. Miss Gold allowed the lights to
glimmer from her brightly coloured robes, hoping that as many people
would see her as possible.
And there were many people about. In the other buildings, in
the streets, dashing to and fro in flying transports. An audience
of millions in the world's largest and most spectacular city. The
display she was about to put on would be remembered for a long time.
She stepped to the edge of the tower, staring down at the long
drop. She felt a sense of apprehension.... What if something went
wrong? She steeled herself and closed her eyes, she just had to
believe in herself. And so, she stepped from the tower, and fairly
flew towards the distant ground at great speed. Her robes started to
glow, as did her skin, with their own luminescence, the further she
went. Everything was going as planned.
Her robes billowed out behind her. Spotlights from all across
the city highlighted her descent, even though they didn't need to, to
the amazement and, in some parts, horror, of the crowd. Then, just as
it looked like she was going to smash face-forward into the cleared
area of the city's Central Square, she exploded in a shower of
glittering particles, raining down upon the crowd.
After a long silence, the sound of applause, of cheering,
started to spread across those gathered. Before long the sound was
deafening. And as her final remains disappeared from sight, fireworks
exploded into the night sky as the festival got underway.
----o
Serenity wiped a tear from her eye and turned away from the
screen. "If it were not for the fact that she was already dying, I
would not have allowed this to occur."
Mars knelt down beside her Queen. "Would it be that we end
our lives with even a fraction of the spectacle." Serenity turned
to her and smiled weakly.
"Peace." She said. "Is always tinged with the sadness of
what has been lost."
