Qualinesti ruler Kith-Kanan after finding out what his son did commands him to go work on the mighty fortress Pax Tharkas with the war captives and criminals, rather than sentence him to death.
Ulvian is almost killed at the fortress when a block falls off of a ramp.
A powerful sorcerer named Drulethen saves Ulvian from the block by using his magic.
Later Verhanna, the princess, is pursuing a pair of slavers and is bitten by a goblin and poisoned.
In a desperate attempt Rufus, Verhanna's companion, asks Greenhands, a stranger, to heal her.
Next Verhanna, Greenhands, and Rufus set out on a journey to find Greenhands father.
1.2 Either it was mere coincidence or it was fate Greenhands finds his father soon after they head out on the journey and they find him in a most peculiar situation.
Surprisingly enough Ulvian escapes from Pax Tharkas and goes to Drulethen's fortress and they hide there until Kith-Kanan comes looking for them.
To sum up a bit Drulethen was merely using Ulvian to get himself out of slavery and building the fortress, and now Drulethen is holding him captive.
In the end Kith-Kanan rescues Ulvian and you find out that Kith-Kanan is Greenhands father.
