1 BILLET DOUX
Chloe reached her home, breathless, in pain and knowing full well this could be her last day in Kansas. The house was empty, her parents moved to New York during the Lex Luthor election campaign. He was some messiah back then, now he's a crook ruling the country with an iron fist, trying desperately to destroy the soul of a man he considered his best friend back when.
The snow was coming down heavy, and it was brumal outside. Chloe wondered if the Droids (Lex Luthor's personal Gestapo who brutally enforced control in Metropolis) would come looking for her, maybe, maybe not. She paused to think, then began a search for matches to light a fire.
Chloe could feel warmth on her icy legs, it was blood. A droid had cut her when she had passed the Metropolis boundary into Smallville. The pain was becoming unbearable, but she had nothing to ease it. The only thing on her mind was completing the letter to Clark.
There were no matches; she knew she would have to do this the hard, old- fashioned way. She began to search the house up and down, her leg was starting to numb, and she felt like giving up altogether. Time was becoming a burden. The paper and pen she had carried with her were pulled from the back of her jeans, and she began to write her letter…
Clark, I've escaped from Metropolis. Lex and his cronies are after me, they want to stop me from spreading the information I have. He wants to kill you with some kind of weapon, you need to do something, you need to put a stop to him, and if it means hurting Pete, then so be it. He betrayed us along time ago when he teamed with Lex to become Vice-President; he's one of them now.
I have nowhere else to go Clark; I'm not going to make it any further. If you find my body before them, dump it where they'll never find it. I can't stand the thought of any of those...things touching me. It would feel like him touching me, the man I despise more than anyone else. I never really had the chance to tell you this before, but I really love you.
As the snow came down, Chloe pushed the letter in between two floorboards, she knew Clark would find it, somehow.
She looked up at the ceiling. Her head began to feel heavy, and she started to make shapes from the swirly patterns. Her focus was on what was above her, but there was a noise outside, a rumble, like an engine. The door swung open…
