Song to Laegolas*

"In a world of eternal darkness

Held by threads of pity and despair,

Borne to the world was a silver star,

Eyes of ethereal sky and golden hair.

Dunned Laegolas, or Greenleaf; fair

'Twas reared in Mirkwood, a prince,

Son of the King Thranduil, sage ruler,

Laegolas couldn't fathom – nor bear –

The way the world had become.

The roaring wind upon the willow's eaves

The feather-light whisper of a mother's song

The echoing hum of rattling leaves - -

Silent; where had time gone wrong?

His dear heart, Prince of Mirkwood,

Took upon the role presented –

A fellowship to restore order to life,

End an epoch of murder and strife,

In his heart he knew he shall do all he could!

Soft! A hollow cry of fallen game,

In a forest long since tame,

Wood thinned out, animals dispersed,

How his heart aches!

Traveling lone though in company,

An individual thinker working in group harmony,

Laegolas, Prince of Mirkwood –

In thou hands are we!"

* Legolas is truly Laegolas, by his elven name.

Laeg – green; Golas/-olas – leaf, foliage. Hence, he is Greenleaf.

Disclaimer: I do not own Laegolas from Lord of the Rings.
