Peek into the Past

Gundam Wing isn't mine. Please don't not sue me for the use of it. If you really want some Cheerios.... I'll mail them to you, no charge. That's just how nice I am.

WuFei gazed solemnly across the waving field. The calm rise and fall of the grain reminded WuFei of a field of flowers, the soothing, reassuring field of flowers from his memories.

He was alone, but what was to be expected. He didn't want the company. It always brought pain.

He tore his gaze from the field and back to his Gundam, Shenlong.... Nataku.

"It's been a year.... A year without you." he muttered gently to his metal giant. As if to respond to his action, a bird landed by him. It started to sing a mournful song of death and war. WuFei paid little mind to the bird itself, but more to the song it composed. The song was his life. The war in his life then and now, but the death was not of the people who died in those wars. It was Nataku's death that made him melancholy.

A year ago he found out that he was betrothed to marry a girl from birth he didn't even know. He hated the idea because he didn't love her. Back then he was a scholar; he didn't care about honor and justice. What mattered to him were his studies. Even though he despised the idea, he went through with it. To make matters worse for him, his wife, Meiren, only cared about honor and justice. The marriage was not a happy one. Meiren, Nataku, was always stating in one form or another that she was from a line of great warriors and she was forced to marry a SCHOLAR?!?!?!

Weeks after their marriage, WuFei found out that Oz was going to drop the colony on Earth as part of project meteor. WuFei was outraged. But he chose to ignore the action. Meiran couldn't let it go though and she went into space to fight off the mobile suits. WuFei found out about what she was doing and left for space after her. He joined her, but a little too late. Her Tallgeese was torn apart. He destroyed the last of the mobile suits and scooped her up to bring her back to the colony. After they arrived, he brought her to his favorite field of flowers. They sat down, next to each other and gazed over the field.

"The field of flowers is so beautiful today. I did a good job protecting the colony, didn't I, WuFei?" She then closed her eyes and leaned on his shoulder. He nudged her and muttered Nataku. When she didn't stir, he turned and caught her in his arms and realized that she was dead.

The memory of her dying on his shoulder haunted him day and night. He was always afraid it would happen again. That someone close would die. So he vowed then never to get close to anyone ever again. There was too much pain involved, but he never let it show.

Maybe that's why the other pilots can't understand my aloofness and values. Because I never show it, WuFei thought. He shook his head, turned, and just gazed at the field and listened to the sad song of his past.
