A/N Own nothing. I was really bored and I wanted to write something that would
just be one chapter long. And, this was what came out. I do NOT like Daine/Kaddar,
but I don't tell myself to write anything. I write what comes out and this is what came
out. Happy reading.

Numair Salmalin took the letter from the messenger boy. He undid the envelope on
the letter. On the envelope, he noticed, was Carthak's seal. He read:

Dear Numair,

I'm sorry that I haven't written in a while. Kaddar and I are trying to
deal with endless riots. Need I say that it is not going well.
Some like the thought of peace with Tortall, while others prefer
Ozorne's ways. I wish I had your experience and knowledge in this area,
but I do not, so I suppose I must learn to deal with it.
Kaddar and I were married two weeks after his coronation as emperor.
It was a beautiful wedding. I wish you could have been there, but I know
that one trip was enough for you. The flowers and the gown were all so
gorgeous and elegant. It proved to me Carthak's vast wealth that stretches
far beyond Tortall's. I do love him, Numair. You didn't seem to believe
me when I told you. I'm sorry if I disappointed you.
I do hope your experiments and spells are progressing well. I know you
love to work hard so this letter may lay untouched for a few days. It's all
right, I understand. I am your magelet, remember?
Varice wishes you hello. She also says she hopes you will visit again soon,
as do I. I miss you terribly, Numair. I can't deny that.
I just want you to know one thing. I want you to know that I am okay.
That I don't need you to look out for me. I can take care of myself. Always
have, always will.

Love,

Veralidaine, Empress of Carthak

Numair finished reading the letter and sent it down on his desk. A small tear trickled
down his face.

Pretty depressing, huh? Don't expect another chapter on here because this was just
something that I had to do. Just this one little thing.
