A Coward's Way Out

By Kenomi

There are many different ways to view the death of Tomoe in Samurai X. Many people see it as Tomoe protecting Kenshin, but this is another view. (I'm not saying you have to like it, but give it a try, ne?) This is just the beginning of a few chapters. Please read and review!

He knows.

He knows and he is coming.

The snow is deep as I trudge my way up the path, where I recognize Idekya talking to Hideaki near a cabin in the middle of the forest. They both acknowledge me with a nod of their heads, and I answer the silent yet looming question, adding to the tense mood that the woods around us posses.

"He is expected to arrive soon. I was afraid that he had been suspicious the entire time, but this morning he will be certain. He should know by now that I am up here, and he is probably prepared for other people up here too." All of my willpower keeps my voice steady and straight, yet my insides are churning.

I'm supposed to be happy. Revenge for the death of Akira will finally happen, yet another part of me wants to scream a warning to him. For it is my fault. His reasoning is distorted, and he had only ever felt a numb, cold feeling to the world. Now he can't even think straight, while being ripped apart by these terrible emotions that are overpowering him.

Ideyka, betraying the Ishin Shishi, leaking information to the enemy the entire time he portrayed an obedient messenger to Kogoro.

Myself, who let him first feel the warm caress of a caring touch, who then turned around and shattered his fragile world.

Himself, who can't believe that he fell victim to such a trap. He, who let himself feel these strange and dangerous emotions in the first place.

My thoughts are interrupted when a black clad figure emerges from the woods, and immediately addresses Hideaki.

"We have word that three of our posts are not responding to the signals. They are the closest to the beginning of this road, and our only solution to this is that Himura Battousai is much faster than we previously thought." The black-clad man finishes his relayed message, and expectantly awaits orders from Hideaki.

"Then we can only expect the other posts were informed." Was the answer. With a curt nod, the black-clothed man, and he vanished into the woods once more. So, he is coming. A strange calm washes over me, as I walk into the cabin by orders of the pair outside. Now we can only wait until the last post is heard from, and his black eyes grace my gaze once more…
