I own this work, but the characters it was semi-based on belong to Squaresoft. If I owned them, we wouldn't need to write our own yaoi ^_^

I wrote this for Labyrinth, which is a literary magazine a group of students at my school put out at the end of the year. It got in, but I got groans from all concerned when I tried to explain it as a FF8 fanpoem… I wanted to explore the relationship between Seifer and Squall, in particular the love-hate dynamic their rivalry seems to have. It was also written with yaoi in mind, but you'll only see it if you look *really* hard. As always, C&C is like air for me, and I believe I'm starting to grow gills . Tell me what you think, even if you hate it.

Aite: Japanese.

My friend, partner, lover, rival, enemy.

The one whom I must face.

We were never

The best of friends.

In truth,

I didn't like him much.

We fought all the time,

For the sake of the hurt we could cause.

He was always a step ahead;

A year older, stronger, taller.

I could never defeat him.

I was the one, left,

When the fight was over-when he was done.

Bruised, bleeding, but determined.

He called me unworthy.

Weak.

Yet, when I healed,

He was there

Challenge ready on his lips.

I never understood…

Slowly I grew closer,

Gaining.

Almost as strong, as bright.

Always the glowing moon to his fiery sun.

Still in his shadow,

But almost…almost drawing even.

At last, I caught him.

We fought, and he won.

But I was no longer the only one to bleed.

We marked each other

It amused him.

I knew no more.
