Kenshin grabbed his sakaba as he walked out of his room, and padded softly towards Kaoru's. "Kaoru..-dono! Are you almost ready?" Kenshin called through the door.
"Hai! Just…a…second!" Kaoru called back gaily, as she opened the door, fixing her pink ribbon. "Kenshin! You got a new gi!" Kaoru exclaimed.
"Aa. You noticed." Kenshin replied.
"I like it!" Kaoru cried, looking at the black color, "It complements your hair!"
"Arigato, Kaoru-dono. We should get going, we need to be there before sunset." And there needs to be time for something special beforehand, too! Kenshin thought.
"Where are we going?" Kaoru asked excitedly.
"You'll see." Kenshin answered mysteriously. "Yahiko!"
"Yes, Kenshin?" the boy came running.
"We're going to be out until sunset, so watch the dojo, will you? And if Sano comes along, tell him…" Kenshin whispered something in Yahiko's ear.
"Ugly's gonna like that! Good luck!" Yahiko scampered off before Kaoru could smack him.
"Kenshin…what was that all about?!" Kaoru stopped to face him.
"Oh, nothing de gozaru. Don't worry. Come on, we haven't even gotten out of the dojo yet! We only have three hours left." Kenshin evaded the question skillfully. The two turned right once they left the dojo, away from downtown Tokyo. They passed the river, then the place where they had been caught in the rain once. Kenshin kept walking, with Kaoru slowing down to remember things. On and on they went, until over an hour had passed. Kenshin then stopped under an old oak tree that overlooked the mountains, and beckoned Kaoru to come closer.
"I've been meaning to say something to you, Kaoru-dono." Kenshin began.
"What is it, Kenshin?" Kaoru asked, puzzled. Could he need to wander away again? I won't let him! Kaoru thought, as she fought back the tears in her eyes. Kenshin knelt down on the ground before the love of his life.
"Kamiya Kaoru-dono, will you marry sessha?" When Kaoru didn't reply, he hung his head.
"Himura Kenshin! Look at me!" Kaoru ordered. "Did you think for one moment I'd say no?! Baka! I love you, you baka! Yes, yes, yes!" Kaoru cried, kneeling down and flinging her arms around Kenshin. Kenshin's eyes flew open as he hugged her back. He pulled her arms from him, then presented a little black box. Kaoru gasped, and she opened it. Inside lay a golden ring with a dark blue sapphire on it. Kenshin slipped it one her left ring finger, and kissed the ring. As Kaoru admired it, Kenshin asked,
"Do you like it, Kaoru-d…Kaoru?"
"Oh, I love it, Kenshin!" Kaoru hugged him once more.
As he stood up, Kenshin called,
"Look, Kaoru! The sky!" The happy couple stood together, arms around each other, watching the blazing sun set among a red and purple sky.
