the next part is here but I need to apologize for its shortness: but I promised to post tonight and I thought a little bit is better than nothing…
thanks to all of you who reviewed !!!
… I love to read what you think about my story…
Mebrireth: thanks, that means a lot to me – I read the book in English and I try to stick with the speech – although sometimes I wonder if what I wrote is really still English :-) … and yes, it is nice to get reviews!!!
Carys: yes there is more… :-) are you referring to 'On the Road Again' ? *looking innocent* … I will update that one soon, promise!
Kazaera: yes, he should have gone to Aragorn… but then – where would be my story??? :-) Legolas character is not very well developed in the book which allows some freedom at handling him… :-))))))) what Aragorn will say? Well, we will see :-) … soon!!!
Green_Dream: thank you very much… but why do you think you can not write like this? I can tell you I thought the same and now look at all the nice reviews I got !!!
ArtemisPrime: well, I try to stick with the book but must confess the film does influence me. Legolas is a character that we know little of if we stick to facts. There is no explanation as to why Elrond chose him to go with the fellowship and no background at all is given. But he was quick to draw his bow to defend Gimli when they met the riders of Rohan so I would assume he is not one to back down from a fight… but that is solely my interpretation…
So on with the story… and thanks for reviewing…

'Well if none of you volunteers I will have to choose.' The lightness of his tone belied the dark look in his eyes as Gimli's eyes wandered from one man to the other.
He had been waiting far too long for this moment for it was not in the dwarf's nature to keep his temper under control. He was going to enjoy this as much as he could. He was not one to normally enjoy another one's pain or fear but remembering the sight of Legolas, beaten and in pain was enough to set his blood boiling.
For a moment he remembered how the elf had reacted to the threat against Gimli when they had met the riders of Rohan.
'He stands not alone.' His words directed at Eomer had been then.
Well, he would teach these men that Legolas did not either.
Elladan only smiled, crossing his arms in front of his chest. He had been surprised at the deep concern Gimli had shown on Legolas' behalf. Their bond of friendship had not gone unnoticed by the son's of Elrond but only now they became fully aware of it's depth.
The elf had not forgotten that an insult towards his sister had started all this and that alone would have been enough for him to stand by the dwarf's side. But Legolas also was a friend to him and so he did not only understand but even share the rage Gimli felt.
He stood tall and proud and a cold smile played around his lips as he coolly regarded the men.
It was Lian that Gimli finally advanced on, his axe ready in his hand.
The man of Gondor found himself unable to back away any further and upon seeing the dwarf getting closer, an expression of determination on his face a surge of fear went through him. He had faced many opponents in his life but none of them had seemed to be so full of hatred towards him. He was wounded and weakened by pain and loss of blood but he was a warrior and so he did the only thing left he could do. Drawing a small dagger, the only weapon he still carried, with his left hand, he flung himself at the dwarf hoping to gain a moment of surprise. It was a move born out of desperation for he knew that without the use of his right arm he hardly held a chance to best Gimli.
The dwarf had expected a move like this and easily sidestepped the attack. Using the blunt side of his axe he countered with a hard blow. Despite his earlier words the dwarf did not aim to maim or kill. He hit the man's right shoulder hard and Lian stumbled back against the wall again. But despite the hot pain flaring through his body a flicker of hope shown in his eyes for a brief moment for he had noticed the dwarf's restraint. Had Gimli used his axe the way he usually did his threat of relieving him of an arm would have found fulfillment.
Hope died quickly again as Gimli moved in on him and he found himself at the receiving end of a very angry dwarf's axe. Even as he resigned himself from hitting the man with the sharp blade Gimli's blows could still inflict quite some damage for the dwarf did not pull his strength. Lian brought up his dagger and pushed himself away from the wall towards the dwarf. He could avoid Gimli's second blow to land on his left forearm but with the axe hit his dagger and the impact knocked his only weapon from his fingers.
For a moment he could see the door leading out of this room no longer blocked by Elladan who had become engaged in a fight of his own and the thought to simply give up and run flickered briefly in his mind. But he doubted that the dwarf would let him escape even if he was able to leave the room. His wound had weakened him as well as the blows he had just received. In the end it was a last remain of a warriors pride that caused him to continue the fight.
He tried to duck Gimli's blows and move in on the dwarf, trying to use his advantage of speed only to find his opponent's reactions were much quicker than he would have thought. Gimli moved with far more agility and speed then his stocky frame would have given him credit for.
Casting one quick glance sideways between two moves Gimli could see Surdim making himself acquainted with the wall once more. He had made the mistake in advancing on Elladan when he saw his companion attack Gimli in the desperate hope they might somehow manage to escape. The elf carried no weapon but his quick reflexes and surprising strength cost the man dearly. Had he been surprised by Legolas' skill he found himself facing an uninjured elf now who took great delight in humiliating him in sidestepping each of his blows and landing accurate ones in return. His speed was nothing a mere man could deal with and Surdim found himself unable to block any of the blows raining down on him.
The struggle was short lived as both men could not stand against their opponents for long.
To Gimli each blow that landed was immensely satisfying and he was truly disappointed when one hard hit to the side of Lian's head finally ended the fight. It caused the man to stumble and sink to his knees, and he held his hands up to signal his utter defeat, unable to get to his feet again through the haze of pain and swirling darkness that settled over his eyes.
There was fear plainly to see on his face as he looked up at the dwarf towering over him, his axe still raised. One last shuffle and Surdim's body landed hard on the floor next to his companion. The man did not move again but the slight raising of his chest showed he was still alive.
'What do you say, master elf, have you ever seen a sight as petty as this?' Gimli asked disgust in his voice.
'I have seen many things but I must confess I do not wish to let my eyes linger on this for any longer. I would say spare your axe to be tainted with the blood of this men. It would not be worth the effort.'
With a nod Gimli consented. Relief broke out on Lian's face as they turned to leave. He had not been too sure about the dwarf not carrying out his threat after all.
'Heed the king's words.' Gimli's parting words echoed through the room. 'For I will not hesitate to carry them out should I ever see you again.'

The sound of footsteps made Elrohir sit up straighter, straining his ears. Legolas did not move, the effect of the herbs he had been given still keeping him in a deep healing sleep. They were too light to be Gimli's but not light enough to be his brother's or a hobbit's. He moved without a sound to the place were Legolas had dropped his weapons after entering the room and draw one of Legolas' long knifes. Then he took in a place were he could not be seen from the door and waited.
The footsteps draw nearer and silently the door was pushed open. Quick as lightening the elf reacted, the cold steel of the elven blade coming to rest against the man's throat as soon as he had entered.
