Watching
by Gilded Lily

Sarah knew how Watching worked.

Mommy put Sarah down in a place that was warm, soft, and safe. Mommy
told Sarah to Sit and Watch. Sarah Watched a lot, but Sarah liked Watching.
Watching was like one of Sarah's story books with colors, lights, and Mommy
as the pretty Princess.

Then Watching broke.

Sarah waited for Mommy to fix Watching. When Mommy wouldn't fix Watching,
Sarah decided Sarah should fix Watching.

But Sarah didn't know how big Watching was, and Sarah got lost. Broken Watching
was dark and smelled funny. No Mommy. Only walls. Sarah knew the walls wouldn't
help Sarah. They didn't lead to Mommy. They didn't want to let Sarah out.

Sarah tried not to cry. Mommy didn't like it.

"Your mother is upstairs," said a wall.

"Mommy's broken like Watching," Sarah hiccuped.

The wall laughed, then became a man. He looked like a Prince in Sarah's
storybooks.

"What is watching?"

Sarah told the Prince about Watching.

"I see. And what makes watching work?"

Sarah was happy that she knew something the Prince didn't know. "Magic," Sarah
said. "And Mommy."

The Prince laughed. "More than you know, little one. More than you know.
Shall we go and fix watching, then?"

She held the Prince's hand, and the Prince lead Sarah back to Sarah's part of
Watching.

"Your watching, milady."

Sarah smiled and the colors moved, the music played, and Mommy danced.

Watching was pretty again.

"Can you tell me your name, little one?"

Mommy told Sarah, Don't tell strangers your name. But the Prince fixed Watching,
so he must be as powerful as Mommy.

"Sarah." Then she said, "Thank you."

The Prince made a funny face at Sarah. "Do not thank me as yet Sarah." The
Prince had funny eyes. One was brown, the other one was blue. Sarah laughed,
and the Prince disappeared.

Back to Watching. Sarah thought Mommy fixed Watching better than the Prince.
After the Prince fixed Watching, Watching didn't look like Sarah's storybooks
anymore.
