Dear Mr Ollivander.
I recently read your book Ways Of The Wand: My Life Making Magic and it inspired me! The anecdotes were very funny and it was interesting to see which wands famous wizards and witches use. I completely see what you mean, making your own wand will put it in tune with your own "mystic vibrations" more than any shop brought wand ever could, even one of your own. I too am surprised so few people do this.
You didn't give many details in your book as to how to make your own so I re-read what you said about making wands for your shop and applied it where I could. I chose willow and got a small dead tree. After leaving it for two months I came to the conclusion that it was fully seasoned. I removed the bark and got it smooth and fairly straight. I cut it down for size (you mentioned in WOTW that you never go for a particular size – just that one will feel right. I did this and it came from my inner elbow to the tip of my middle finger – the perfect size and no measuring at all!) I smoothed off the ends.
Then I went or my unicorn hair. There is a field near my house where a lot of horses are kept and as luck would have it 2 unicorns were on there for a few days, it is a popular migration route. Of course, muggle thought they were just beautiful horses but they still got many admirers. Thus it was midnight, a full moon no less, that saw me getting the vital tail hairs. I've since been told this may make them more powerful, I hope this is the case. I was very lucky; I regained consciousness only two days after being kicked by the mare! She was, incidentally about 15 hh and, I would guess, about 6 years. Is this a good size/age?
So I have done everything mentioned in the book but I'm still left with one puzzle. How to get the hair in? You mentioned that magic couldn't be used, though you didn't specify why. I would really appreciate it if you could let me know how. Also, how wide should a wand be? Mine is currently rather wide, that way if it doesn't work as a wand I can still defend myself with it by hitting any opponent over the head!
I hope you reply though I understand how busy you are. If not, may I just say thank you for writing such an informative and entertaining book. I hope you write another, perhaps on how to make your own wand.
Yours truly,
Harriet Husselmay.
There will be his reply posted and hopefully any farther correspondence. If you have any questions Miss Husselmay may include them in her letters but this isn't an ASK OLLIVANDER. Also if you have any suggestions for his answer, especially how to add the hair please tell me! I have the same problem…obsessive or what?!
Thank you for reading.
