Epilogue......set after 'Cry Your Name.'
*****
Liz sighed, sitting down on the cold earth carefully. It was still difficult to believe she was here........visiting Alex......visiting his grave. What the hell had happened?
"Alex.....I don't know if you can hear me, wherever you are.....but what happened? I know you Alex, you wouldn't have committed suicide.....you would have come to one us, talked to us."
~Like we would have come to you,~ she added mentally.
The thought made her pause. She could remember a time when she couldn't go to him.....when her problems were extraterrestrial, and he was still in the dark. Just thinking back on that made the tears well in her eyes......she would give anything to go back to that time, to know what was going on in that head of his. But now she never would.
"What happened, Alex?" she asked again.
She actually found herself waiting for his answer....and when it didn't come, Liz realised that it never would......and she gave vent to her emotions, crying....wishing that she could just have time back....wishing that he weren't gone. She could still see him that day in the Crashdown......in school, when they had plotted to trap Topolsky.....when he had ended their friendship, thankfully repairing it later. All of the times they had shared together.....
"Liz?"
Liz wiped hurriedly at her face, trying to erase the evidence of tears.
"Maria."
Maria sat down heavily next to her, wrapping an arm around her friends shoulders. "It's okay, babe.....you don't have to act all together for me. 'Specially since I've been blubbering pretty much non stop myself."
Liz nodded, the gesture ending in a sob as she leaned her head on Maria's shoulder, the tears coming even faster than before.
"It's alright, Lizzie," Maria managed through her own tears. "We're gonna get through this.....he'd want us too."
"Yeah," Liz got out. After a moment or two, she stopped crying enough to speak. "I was just.....remembering, back to when he didn't know about the others."
"Ahh,"Maria smiled. "You mean the Cszecholslovakiens."
Liz gave a sort of laugh. "Yeah.....back when things were less complicated."
"Things weren't less complicated Liz.....they were just a different kind of complicated."
"You're probably right."
They sat in silence for a moment, before Maria spoke again. "What do you say.....we go back to the Crashdown.....and have something with enough chocolate to kill a horse.....and talk about the good times."
"Ohh, chocolate *and* reminiscing? Sounds like a very bad combination..... I'm in." The words left her mouth before she even let them, but when they did, she was glad she'd said them......it
would be good to have some time, just her and Maria.
"Thought you might be,"Maria smiled.
And after saying their goodbyes to their friend, they left......to talk about the good times.
