Dínendal, Silent Scout
For the first time in my life the days passed to slowly. I longed for the sun to set, even when it had only just risen. To see the world getting bathed in twilight. To feel the nights dew laying itself upon the grass. My love for the night had been growing stronger lately. For it was in the night that I could be my true self. I could go where I pleased without anybody asking me where I was going. My thoughts would run free and I discovered a new sort of peace would claim my mind. It was in the night that I could ease the pain in my heart.
The pain in my heart, brought to me so many years ago. I can still remember that day… Let me tell you the story, knowing that you are not Elven and therefore are easily distracted, I will do my best to keep it short.
It was a hot summer afternoon, so hot that even the shadows of the trees where but a mere shelter. All animals kept quiet, even the birds would not entertain us with their merry tunes. Only the trees could be heard from time to time, sighing or telling each other short tales about the lovely refreshment of a cool shower.
We were guarding the forest. Haldir, Orophin, Calaglin and I. To many our presence went unnoticed. Also to a small group of travellers. They came from the east and an odd party they were. There were two Dwarves, a Man and an Elf. Apparently the heat didn't bother them for they were singing loud and moving with great speed. At least, great speed for Dwarves, which were in lead. I paused to listen. They were singing a song which went something along the lines of:
Hey Ho, To the bottle I go
To heal my heart and drown my woe
Rain may fall and wind may blow
But there will still be many miles to go
This surprised me. It was an old hobbit song. I wondered where this strange party came from. They were singing a hobbit song, the dwarves and the elf seemed to be friends and they were accompanied by a man! Now, as you might know, for many ages there has not been any friendship or alliance between elves and dwarves, so to see them walking and singing together was a rather odd sight. I wondered how they had found each other, for their people live far away from each other.
My eye fell on the elf. He was the most beautiful male I had ever seen. His long golden hair was braided in a fashion unknown to me. As he walked passed our hiding place I held my breath. His voice was soft and warm, it was so beautiful, so kind that I wanted to call him and make him sing just for me. Instead I held my breath. Amazed by his beauty and strength I felt my heart starting to pound swifter, my cheeks flushed and I knew that it was not the summer sun which caused this.
Haldir went forth to ask the travellers who they were and what they were doing in the forests of Lothlorien. Calaglin and Orophin stood by his side, I could not move and remained hidden. The elf then told us that they were messengers and were all travelling to seek Galadriels council. On their journey they had met each other and decided to travel together. Haldir decided to let them pass and they left silently.
I never saw him again. As a mere scout I was not told about Galadriels visitors and so I never found out where he came from or what his name was. In my heart I carried the memory of his voice and in my minds eye pictured him. When we returned back home the messengers had already left. Every night I think of him and ask myself over and over again why I did not move.
I wonder what could have been if we had met.
