She is calling me. I hear her voice inside my head. She tells me to join her...I can abandon my body,
and come to the Wired with her, she says. Her voice comes again. Join me, Lain, she says. Come to
the Wired. You don't need a body to live, Lain. Everything is blank except for her voice in my mind.
Slowly, I get up and open my window. Jump, Lain, she says. You won't die. I trust her judgment,
and I leap out the window. Cold rain strikes me but I am unaware that I grow chilled. Keep your
legs straight, Lain, she says. I force them out against my instincts and land safely on the soaked
grass. Very good, Lain, she tells me. Now follow me. I see a tiny ball of light hovering in midair. It
floats off, and I follow it. My sodden school uniform clings to me as I walk but I cannot feel the
sensations. The only thing that matters is leaving my body, leaving this pain behind. The light leads
me up to a bridge and then it fades away. Look down, Lain, she says. I look down. The water below
is fast-moving, and looks very cold. Jump, Lain. Her voice nags at me. Jump, Lain. It will be quick
and painless. Jump, Lain. I climb onto the railing.
"I'm coming, Chisa," I tell her, and let myself fall.
Soon, my body is no more. I only exist as Lain of the Wired with my friend Chisa. No more pain...at
last, I am free.
