" Lana's not sure how she feels about our relationship right now. But I am. I
need you to look after her until I get back."
The moment the words left my lips I regretted them. What was I doing asking the
guy that I knew had the hots for my girlfriend to keep a close eye on her while
I was away? Sure he was with Chloe now, but just how serious was that? How am
I supposed to know he won't just drop her if Lana shows a spark of interest?
Because he's Kent. The hero, the boyscout, the good guy, he just wouldn't do
that. I guess that's another thing that worries me. Kent is perfect. How can I
compare with that? Asking him to spend even more time with Lana than he already
does is just asking for trouble. I am such an idiot.
It's not like she said she'd wait for me. In fact, when I asked her, she looked
like she was going to choke on her tongue. Not exactly the response I had been
hoping for. Okay, I know she had been shocked by my news to enlist, and I guess
I should cut her some slack, but come on, is it too much for a guy to expect his
girlfriend of over two years for some sort of commitment? Usually it's the guy
who has trouble committing, but I love her and I have no doubts about our
relationship. Her hesitancy about our relationship is not a good sign. Neither
was the look she gave Clark as we drove away from the school and to the bus
station. Not good at all.
Damn it Fordman! Why didn't you just say 'Hey Clark, I'm leaving town, now's
your chance to make a move on my girlfriend!' I am seriously starting to
question my sanity.
The kiss at the bus station gave me a spark of hope. Sure she never said 'I
love you' when I said it to her, and she still never told me she'd wait for me,
but she did give me that awesome kiss, that must mean something right?
Maybe it just means goodbye.
'Goodbye Whitney. It was fun while it lasted, but you're not going to be here
anymore and Clark is...a girl has got to be practical'.
Goodbye Whitney, hello Clark.
She's going to see him everyday, and I'll simply be the image staring back at
her from the frame beside her bed. How long will it be before she sticks that
photo in the bottom of a drawer? Or worse, how long will it be until she
replaces my photo with one of Clark? And I pushed them together with my
lame request for Clark to watch over her. I set the wheels in motion for my
girlfriend to find a smart, polite, considerate guy to be her boyfriend, someone
who people wouldn't always wonder, as they did with me, 'why is she dating him
anyway?' But everyone will understand what Lana sees in him, everyone loves
Clark.
Pressing my face against the cool glass of the bus window, I take one last look
at Smallville knowing that things will go on without me and that everything will
change.
As we exit the town, the only home I've ever known, I am suddenly reminded of
Clark's campaign slogan 'Clark Kent: Man of Tomorrow'. That's actually quite
fitting. I guess that makes me
'Whitney Fordman: Man of Yesterday'.
~~The end.
