Til I Lay Me Down to Sleep
Surefire couldn't seem to fall asleep. Usually he had no problem drifting off when the daystar was rising after a full night.
"One," he counted aloud to himself.
"...two..." His black-haired lifemate stirred at the rarely heard voice, shifting a bit closer.
"...three..."
Dirk woke up, turning her head to look at Surefire better. Her gaze still blurry with sleep, she asked, "What are you doing?"
"...four... Counting wolves," he replied.
"Oh. Can I listen?"
"Sure. Five..." More alert, she propped herself on an elbow to listen, secretly revelling in the sound. Her own sleepiness vanished as she waited for him to continue counting.
"...six..."
Dirk lifted her vision from half-mast to find her beloved sleeping soundly. Disappointed, she sighed and curled up beside him again. Sleep didn't come. A moment later her soft voice murmured in their den in time with the steady breathing of Surefire's chest.
"One wolf...two wolf."
