centerCrossing Enemy Lines: Prologue/center

It's not my fault!" Kimberly cried.

"Well, if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be on our way to detention tonight!" snapped Mark, flushing crimson with rage.

"Mark! Calm down, you know she didn't do this on purpose, and besides, it was
Gregory who made her trip and fall," said Tom slowly.

Mark, however, decided to ignore this comment and continued his complaints.
"And on top of that, you lost Gryffindor 10 points! Why did you have to mess up our last assignment before the holidays!?"

Kimberly, who couldn't take the insults any longer, stormed out of the common room without another word.

It had been 4 months since she had been at home, and now she couldn't wait to leave. ITo them, everything is my fault,/I she thought to herself, as she wept. IMaybe I don't fit in here after all./I

Suddenly, she bumped into something and jumped back in surprise.

"Oh Hagrid! You gave me such a fright!" Kimberly said as she raised her eyes to the retired gamekeeper.

"Kimberly! Didn' see yeh there!" said Hagrid, his dark eyes shining to see such a promising young student. "How's me girl doin'? Oh dear, why so gloomy now?" he asked, after noticing the tears fall from her eyes.

"Oh Hagrid, my friends hate me and I..... I..... I just don't fit in..... I feel as if though I never will. Mark is right, if it wasn't for me, they wouldn't have to go serve detention..... everything is my fault," Kimberly said sullenly.

"Now why would yeh go sayin' that to yerself? A smart, charismatic an' pretty girl like yeh shouldn' be sayin' that," Hagrid said as he pulled her into a hug.

"Thanks Hagrid," replied Kimberly, who was beginning to feel a little better.

As she pulled back though, Kimberly noticed a gorgeous painting in front of her. The painting contained three young people smiling, who were obviously good friends: two boys and one girl. The boy on the left she immediately recognized as the famous Harry Potter, the wizard who defeated the dark lord Voldemort ten years ago. The girl in the center was a younger version of Hermione Granger, Headmistress of the school. The boy on the right, however, she did not recognize.

Strange... she thought to herself. "Hagrid?" she asked.

"Yes, Kimberly?" Hagrid replied.

"Who is that?" she said, as she pointed to the boy on the right.

"Ahh... Ron Weasley... one of my favorite kids," said Hagrid as he started to remember the past. "Those three remind me of you, Tom and Mark. Such good friends they were, always were there fer each other, even until the end."

"Oh please tell me Hagrid! I absolutely adore your stories!" begged Kimberly, sitting down on one of the stairs.

"Well..." said Hagrid hesitantly.

"Please?" asked Kimberly, as she put on a puppy face.

"Alright, alright. I guess maybe yeh can learn somethin' important from this story anyhow..." said Hagrid. Hagrid looked out of the window, watching the gentle snow fall outside as he reminisced.

You can't go Ron! Yer friends care about yeh! You don't understand!

No, I think I quite understand. Goodbye, Hagrid.

"Well, Kimberly, it all began 11 years ago, on this day, actually. It was Christmas Eve..."
