She lay, quiet, on the bed.

Her face was pale, fragile, staring straight ahead into the ceiling, her arms lying flat on the bed as well as her legs. Motionless. A statue. A prisoner.

A prisoner in her own body.

The smallest smile tugged at her lips as she sang a soft song to herself, her lips making no movement. She allowed her own internal voice sing to her. It was the only one that did.

1 When the moon rises o'er the darkness.

Darkness? No darkness now. It was light in the room, filled with sunlight from the small window. No darkness to be scared of.

The few movements she could make were all she would do that day. Silently she rolled over, her fingers tightening around the stuffed rabbit in her arms.

2 Why does this happen to me, Rabbit? Why am I here?

You know why you're here, Alice. Your mum and dad are dead.

3 Gone.

Yes.I'm sorry, my dear. They are gone. But there is something you can do, something that might help you feel better.

4 What's that, Rabbit?

Would you like to have one last tea party?

Alice's lips curved into a soft smile as she thought of the tea parties she had, the madness, the silliness that went on in those younger days.

Of course, Mr. Rabbit.

Would that make you feel better?

Of course, Mr. Rabbit.

Good. I'm quite glad, then. Now close your eyes, dear Alice, and let the dreams take you.

Alice closed her eyes, her breathing softening to a mere whisper. Almost at once, it seemed, she was falling, falling through the mist. She knew the way, now. Slowly she made her way to the familiar setting, slowly, gazing around her in wonder at this new Wonderland.

So different; so the same. The same places, but they were.twisted, as if carved from images of her very nightmares. Shadows lined the once bright paths now, turning the world around them into gloominess and darkness. A strange feeling crept over her as she shifted her gaze to the now-familiar house in the distance, once so inviting, and now so strange.

Do you see, now, Alice? Do you see what it has become?

She nodded.

Yes, Mr. Rabbit. I see.

Suddenly the world spun around her, twisting, melting into different blurs of color so fast she couldn't recognize anything. Then she was back in her white room again, in the sanitarium, staring at the crowd of doctors and nurses that surrounded her. Her arms were folded tightly into a straitjacket. The doctor was talking, now, telling the nurse that someone had had a seizure of some sort; screaming and thrashing wildly about. He kept on motioning towards Alice. Why was he motioning towards her? She hadn't done anything like that, just met with Mr. Rabbit and walked towards the once pretty house.

Nothing more.nothing more.
