Emma was looking through her parents closet to find her favorite hoodie; a San Diego state one, which happened to be shared by her mom and dad. when she stumbles upon her parents original wedding photo. Emma noticed how her parents didn't seem happy in the photo. She'd heard bits about the night they met, and a kid friendly version of how her parents fell in love. She'd seen wedding photos of both their original wedding, and the vow renewal they had on their two year anniversary before, but this one seemed different. But she also knew that there was more to the story than her parents told her. She walks downstairs to find her parents cooking dinner, while holding each other. She decides at this point to tell them she's ready for the whole story, even if she could probably pry the story out of her uncle Tyler who always told her about the crazy things her dad had done when he and uncle Tyler were battle buddies, Uncle Jacob, or her Abuelita. But she decided to go straight to the source. so she tells them she's ready. Her dad looks at her mom and asks "Cass, what do we do?" Her mom responds with "i think it's time to tell her and Frankie."

So the couple sits with their daughter and son in the living room. With her mom wrapped in her dad's loving embrace. Emma listens as her parents begin from the part she had no clue of: the reason her parents got married in the first place. Including the argument her parents had at the tiny restaurant when her parents ultimately pinky swore that they were getting married, even after her dad called her mom a "liberal nut." Her parents laugh at the memory of that, especially since her dad is liberal now. She had heard stories about her dad's battle with addiction, her parents were always transparent on that part. She had also seen from the time she was little, when her mom's blood sugar would be off, and her dad would sit behind her mom on the couch and stroke her hair, as the glucose gel or insulin worked. But she never expected those two factors to be the reasons why her parents got married, she knew that her mom needed health insurance, and the marine corps found out that her parents married for benefits, and so her dad was sent to the brig. But she had no clue that another factor into why her parents got married was the fact that her dad had drug debt. She also didn't know that her dad would beat the man he owed money to after that man threatened to harm her Abuelita and mom, and her dad would obviously have none of that. She watches her brother try to process this information next to her, he looks just as shocked as she does.

Her parents talk about her dad's first deployment, his injury, Frankie's death and how they had to act like they were in love. After hearing the last part she watches her dad kiss the top of her mom's head, and her mom kiss her dad's left hand, not as an ironic gesture, but because her parents simply couldn't believe how far they had come. Her parents talk about the aftermath of her dad's injury, how hard it was for them. How the man her dad was in debt to turned her parents in, after her dad beat him, and her mom left her dad because of how angry she was at him, just as they were admitting their feelings for each other. How her dad risked everything for her mom, and ended up in the brig because of it. Then her parents tell her how her mom chased after her dad the day he went to the brig, and the two of them professed their love for each other. How he parents had to realize they needed to be vulnerable and open with each other. How once her dad was out of the brig, her dad and grandpa successfully overturned her dad's bad conduct discharge, and her dad started running again. Which led to his quest of running a marathon in every major city, which he had made some great progress in. She happily cheered on her dad alongside her mom and brother at every finish line she was able to.

She looks over at her brother, who is still wearing the shocked expression that he wore the last time she glanced at him. At this point her parents start hysterically laughing. She looks at her parents and tells them they should sell their love story to the hallmark channel. Then her parents decide to put on their original wedding video. She sees the love in her parents eyes on their first wedding day, even if they would've never admitted it. She glances over at her parents again, seeing how in love they were. At this point her parents decide to put on the video of their vow renewal. She watches the love her parents have for each other again, but this time they don't hide it at all. Her mom wears the same dress, and her dad wears his dress blues again. At one point she glances over at her parents again, and watches her mom tilt her head up, so her dad can kiss her, she watches her parents wedding rings knock together as they hold hands.
