Larry Novak- CNN Reporter

1999 December 9th Seattle Washington

We were the only ones there, most of the city had already fled, most of the reporters had too, but I remained and so did my team. It was just us, three interns, we didn't even get salary at CNN, but we had a chance to make history.

"We can't guarantee your safety."

"I know, we know."

Rob turned on the camera and I smiled, my bowtie looked dorky but mom had given it to me and, well this was my first time on television.

"Attention, this is Larry Novak from CNN."

I paused, the PRT agents shook their head like I had a death wish. Maybe I did.

"I stand outside of Lincoln park where the mysterious third Endbringer waits for beloved children's television star Mr. Rogers. In exchange for handing himself over it has agreed to spare the city of Seattle."

I could smell the third Endbringer's monsters, a few of them flew circles in the air, as they remained in the park. So far the monster had kept its word, the mayor and the government had used the peace to evacuate as many people as they could. We had all seen Kyushu, seen what happened to Japan. We were all scared, frightened for the future.

"We don't know if the monster will keep his word, what the future holds, but the hopes and dreams of an entire city rest on one mans sacrifice. I..."

He's here, he nodds and walks up to the edge of the park where the monsters roam.

"Mr. Rogers has arrived, and has given up his life for the city of Seattle."

The monsters bowed before him and made a path. I was crying, it wasn't professional but I had watched his show as a kid.

"I'm sorry, but I will continue to report the news. Mr. Rogers has gone into Lincoln park alone, where the third Endbringer waits for him. The monsters have decided to remain inside, none of us know what is going on or what will happen to-"

"What are you doing?"

My earpeice goes off.

"What?"

"You were supposed to get out of there."

"I, um have to report the news."

There was silence.

"Congratulations kid, you're the only one there and the CEO says you're going national."

I took in a breath.

"CNN reporter Larry Novak is on the scene as Fred Rogers walks into the Endbringer's lair."

"What's the mood of the city?"

"We're all scared, frightened and hope that the city will be spared. Heroes are comming in from across the country and the world incase the new Endbringer desides to break his word."

"And it talks."

"Yes... it agreed to spare the city if we handed over Fred Rogers, who's now walked into the monsters lair."

"Why would an Endbringer do this?"

"I don't know, none of us know, they have never talked to us before. They just destroyed things, maybe he wants to hurt our children by killing him, maybe it's all a trick but it's given us time to get as many people out of the city as possible."

I take a breath from answering questions, I'm scared but I'm the only one here, the only reporter. I look over as I hear noises, foot steps. The Endbringer is shorter then the other two. He has a circular television for a head, he looked gangly, like a robot. He has a purple and red coat on, and pants. Fred Rogers walks next to him. The creature stands before us, heroes wait in the distance. It speaks, it's voice is low and metallic.

"I have spoken to Mr. Rogers and he has convinced me of the errors of my ways. I wish to defect."

I blinked.

"Larry-"

"Breaking news, Mr. Rogers lives and has successfully convinced the Endbringer to stop his rampage. The stand off between the city of Seattle and the new Endbringer might have a peaceful end."

I paused.

"Where armies, heroes, and guns have failed, one man's simple courage and decency has prevailed."

I looked at a PRT officer, who motioned for me to leave, I did so, no sense in pushing my luck. I felt my heart pound.

"The PRT has asked us to leave while they accept the Endbringer's surrender. Today...today humanity won."

The camera turned off, and I went into the news van, I had just seen history. None of us talked, none of us wanted to jinx this moment, but in some fundamental way, everything had changed.
