"Alright everyone get ready to roll out, we got a case," Voight announced walking into the bullpen where we were all doing paperwork.

"Hey Sarge, who should I ride with?" Katie asked since she hadn't yet been assigned to a partner.

Voight looked around deep in thought for a minute before Jay spoke up, "Hey sarge, she can ride with me!"

"Alright then, Torres, I guess you're gonna be riding with Halstead." Voight responded.

After they had sorted out who Katie was gonna ride with they went down to their cars to get ready to go. After discussing it for a minute they decided that they would take Jay's truck since the scene was in a relatively muddy, wooded area and Katie had driven her Camaro to work that day instead of her Jeep. After her and Halstead finished talking he noticed her struggling with her vest so he walked over to help her with it. Katie had a strange feeling she was being watched but after looking around, a habit she thanks the Marines for, she elected to ignore it. Little did she know that one of her boyfriend, Noah's, friends had seen the whole thing and relayed the information back to him.

Once they arrived at the scene it was relatively quiet, which was weird because crime scenes were normally loud and noisy and bustling with energy, so Katie was quite confused as to why it was so quiet around the cabin they had just pulled up at. As soon as Katie stepped inside she had understood the reasoning behind the somber mood, she was shocked by the sight she saw. There was a large archway that lead from the living room to the kitchen with a very large sign that read, "WELCOME HOME DADDY!" In big, bold letters that had been colored on in marker, there were lot's of party decorations like balloons and streamers, and there was a table that had a big gift box on it. What they saw below the banner was horrendous. There was one woman, no older than 25, lying on the floor in front of the table with a bullet wound to the chest, after checking the woman's pulse Katie noted that the woman was deceased, then proceeded to walk through the archway under the banner, and into the kitchen. Walking into the kitchen Katie saw a sight that pulled on her heart and caused her to struggle to keep her composure. There was a man, who also couldn't have been older than 25, lying on the floor, he had clearly just gotten home. There was a brown duffle bag lying next to him and he was still wearing his standard issue Marine Corps. uniform, and he also had a gunshot wound to the chest.

After they had walked around the scene for a few minutes, examining it and gathering as much evidence as possible, Katie heard a noise coming from a room upstairs. Wanting to keep her team safe, she decided to go investigate. She slowly made her way up the stairs and stopped to draw her weapon before pushing the door open to the room where the noise was coming from. Slowly pushing the door open, the sight Katie saw surprised her, she expected to see a normal bedroom but instead she saw a room with walls that were painted a mustard yellow color, she saw a dresser with a changing station on one wall and on the wall opposite to the door, under a window there was a crib, the room was filled with things for a baby, with a rocking chair next to a small bookshelf in the corner and a baby swing in the center of the room. Walking further into the room Katie was praying that the noise wasn't what she thought it was, but was saddened to see a baby sat up crying in the crib, Katie immediately went to the crib, picking the baby up and whispering comforting words into her ear. Katie looked around trying to find anything that she might be able to use to identify the baby when she say a small gold plate on the wooden frame of the crib with the name "Tatum Grace Stafford" engraved into it. As soon as she saw the name she was hit with shock, with her voice breaking she called for her best friend.

"Hailey! Get up here!" Katie called.

"What? What's going - Oh my god!" Hailey stopped mid-sentence when she saw her best friend holding the baby.

"Hailey!" Katie yelled as her friend just stared in shock, "Take the baby I have to go check on something right now." Once the baby was out of her arms and in Hailey's she ran downstairs to the Marine who was lying dead on the kitchen floor, she rolled him over to reveal his face and immediately went to the front door to go sit down in Jay's truck where she began to break down. Katie couldn't believe it, the dead Marine they had just found was one of Katie's best friends who she had only seen months before right after his baby girl had been born, and now he was dead. Specialist Christopher Ryan Stafford, one of her best friends, was dead, along with his wife, Julia, now leaving their six month-old daughter, Tatum, without her parents.

After she had been sat in the truck for a while Jay came out to check on her. "I know how you feel right now," he said, "I was a ranger for a while before I became a detective, a few months after I started I got a call, it was one of my best friends, he ended up being homeless after he got home, and he was sleeping on the streets, he got shot by some dealer because he saw a corner boy selling, and the dealer was scared that my friend would rat him out and it would be bad for his business. My friend was getting his life back on track, he had just found a place to stay and was about to move in, he was paying his bills, going to support groups and then he was just dead, out of nowhere." Jay finished.

"Why him?" Katie asked through a broken voice before she broke down again. Just then Hailey came to announce that they were headed back to the district. Jay nodded and started the truck, as he began to pull away he put a comforting hand on her leg and just kept it there. When they got back to the district and got out of the truck Jay hugged Katie, giving her a minute to calm down before they went back inside, little did they know, someone had seen them again, except this time it was Katie's boyfriend, Noah.

After they had gotten back to the bullpen they started investigating, they were going through evidence and finding as many clues as they could. They had made a lot of progress and Kim was going through legal documents when all of a sudden she said, "Hey Katie you might wanna come look at this." Katie walked over to where Kim was and stood behind her chair. "Katie, I don't know if you know this or not, but in Christopher and Julia's will and their legal documents for Tatum, if anything were to happen to them Tatum goes to you." Kim said and Katie looked shocked. She then turned her head to look to where Adam was in the break room holding Tatum while talking to the DCFS worker. Katie just nodded her head as she walked towards the break room to talk to the DCFS worker.

"Hi, Mrs. Smith, um we just found some legal documents, regarding Tatum. We read through them and Mr. and Mrs. Stafford had stated that if anything were to happen to them Tatum would go to a Katie Angela Torres." Katie announced.

"Great," Mrs. Smith replied, "And where are you guys on finding out where she is right now?"

"Here's the thing about that," Katie started, "Katie Angela Torres, that's me. But I wouldn't be able to take her tonight, I'd have to get my place ready, I have to go out and by things, and I'd have to get a room put together for her, and -"

"Katie," Mrs. Smith responded, "We completely understand, we can place Tatum in an emergency foster placement for a few days while you get your place ready and once you're ready we'll bring Tatum to you."

Katie was relieved to here this. She agreed to take Tatum before Voight told her to head home so she could get her house ready. Before she went home she stopped at a few stores to make sure she had everything that she would need to get her place ready for little Tatum Grace to move in with her. After she went home Katie spent a few hours putting Tatum's room together before she waited for Noah to get home from work.

A few hours later, Katie heard the door open and close, signifying that Noah had gotten home. "Hey babe, I have some good news." She called out too him.

"Oh yeah? I have some news too but I'll let you go first." Noah replied to Katie.

"Alright, you remember Christopher Stafford and his wide and daughter, right?" Katie waited for his nod before she continued, "Well he was killed this morning and in his will, Tatum is supposed to come to me if anything happened to them, so she's gonna come stay with us in a week or two."

"Alright," Noah said, "is it my turn to talk now?" He didn't wait for Katie's response before he continued, "I want to know what the hell, this is!" Noah said as he pulled up pictures of her and Jay outside the district from earlier. It was at this point that Katie noticed the alcohol on his breath and knew what was about to happen.

"Noah," Katie started, "He's just my partner, today was rough and he was just helping me out." She said in an attempt to calm him, but it didn't work, as soon, his hand was wrapped around her arm and he was in her face, screaming.

"Really Katie?! You think you can cheat on me and get away with it, after everything that I've done for you? This is what you give me?" Noah was at a level of angry that Katie had never seen before, and for the first time ever, Noah hit her. Katie didn't have time to process what was happening before she felt a sharp blow to her ribs.

"Noah…" Katie started to try to calm the man down but it didn't work, he just hit her more and more, before eventually, he decided he'd had enough for that night and went to their room to go to bed, leaving Katie to process what had just happened on her own. Katie slowly made her way over to the couch and sat down, in pain processing what had just happened before she eventually let sleep take over, hoping that in the morning this would all just be a bad dream.
