I decided to write the entire series in genderbend form. But unlike my other genderbend fanfics, this one will have the entire cast genderbend. Though there might be only a few differences, due to how the world of The Dragon Prince seem to have better gender quality than in the real world.

Long ago, Xadia was one land rich in magic and wonder. In the old times, there were only the six Primal Sources of magic. The Sun. The Moon. The Stars. The Earth. The Sky. And the Ocean. But a thousand years ago, a human mage discovered new magic - the seventh source. Dark Magic. It used the essence within magical creatures themselves to unleash dark power. Horrified by what they saw, the elves and the dragons put a stop to the madness. They drove every last human to the west. And so, the continent was divided in two. In the east, the magical lands of Xadia. And in the west, the human kingdoms. For centuries, the Queen of the Dragons herself defended the border. The humans called her Storm, for when she spoke, her voice ignited the sky. But on the eve of last Winter's Turn, the humans used unspeakable Dark Magic to slay Storm. Then, without mercy, they destroyed her only egg, her heir the Dragon Princess. Now the world stands on the edge of all-out war.

Chapter 1:
Call of the Storm

Rain pours on the castle of Katolis. Inside one of the rooms was Princess Ezra who's asleep in her bed, loudly snoring. She suddenly turns and cuddles her pet - a glowing toad named Bait. Ezra started drooling on Bait, making the toad wake up to lick the drool off her head.

"Take that, marshmallow monster." Calla quietly exclaims to herself, as she's drawing a picture of a dragon roasting marshmallow monsters on a big piece of paper.

A thunder crashes, startling Calla and waking Ezra up. "Calla!" Ezra called out.

"It's okay, Ezra. It's only a thunderstorm. Nothing to be afraid of. Go back to sleep." Calla assured Ezra.

"I wasn't scared, Bait was scared." Ezra claimed. Bait growled in response.

"Of course she is."

"She was!" Ezra argued before laying back down.

A lone dark-haired female Crownguard named Marcia patrols the forest outside the kingdom. She suddenly hears a noise, she turns around and aims her crossbow into the direction of the noise.

"Who's there? Declare yourself, in the name of Queen Hera!" she ordered.

Thunder rumbles as lightning lights up the scene, revealing figures in between the trees. Marcia shoots an arrow but it instead hits a tree, so she runs away. One of the figures dash out of the forest and follows her. Marcia trips while the attacker makes their way through the tree tops. She turns around and aims her crossbow, but loses the target. The attacker draws their blades and kicks Marcia down a hill into a puddle of water, causing her helmet to slide off. When her attacker jumped in front of her, Marcia tried to shoot them, but they knocked the crossbow off her hands with their blade, then she quickly draws her sword, but they knocked it off her hand. Then the attacker hold their blades against Marcia's throat.

"Please! Who are you?" Marcia asked fearfully.

The attacker is taken aback as they look at the Crownguard's scared face and lowers their weapons. Marcia pushes herself backwards until she can stand and picked up her helmet, confused by her attacker's hesitation, then flees into the forest. The attacker lowers their weapons further and sighs.

Back at Katolis, in one of the towers resides Lady Vira, the High Mage and loyal advisor to Queen Hera. She's dressed in fine elegant attire which signifies her status, and has her long greying hair tied up in a proper bun. She is examining a large mirror with Elvish runes on the border, having acquired it since last Winter's Turn. Then she is disturbed by a knock on her door.

"High Mage! Please, it's urgent!" Marcia's voice exclaimed frantically. Vira covers the mirror with a sheet and went to open the door. "Lady Vira! I've seen something." Marcia said panically.

Later, Vira approaches Queen Hera's bedchambers.

Two guards stand besides the door. One is a light-skinned male and the other is dark-skinned female. The female signals Vira to stop. "Lady Vira, uh, Queen Hera hasn't risen yet."

Vira pushes the doors to the room open anyway. She approaches Hera's bedroom windows and opens the curtains. Pipette whistles and flaps her wings frantically.

"Vira, didn't I tell you if you ever woke me up this early again... I'd have you beheaded?" Queen Hera joked, smirking.

Flustered, Vira clears her throat and said, "I'll give you a moment."

Vira waits at the balcony of Hera's room for the queen. Hera soon joins Vira while carrying Pipette on her arm, scratching the bird's chin.

"So, what's so important that you come into my bedroom risking your life like this?" Hera asked.

"Assassins." Vira stated.

"I see." Hera said calmly, as if its nothing new to her.

"A scout on patrol discovered them just before dawn."

"Well, don't look so grim. You'll get wrinkles." Hera quipped. "Besides, we've fought off plenty of assassins. Haven't we, Pipette?"

"It's different this time. We believe they're Moonshadow Elves."

This made Hera frown. "Moonshadow Elves? Then how did the scout escape?"

"I don't know. It was muddy, wet, dark... Somehow she got very lucky."

"The Crown Guard won't be enough to hold them off. Send for General Amayus and the Standing Battalion."

"The Breach is too far. They'll never make it back in time."

"What's tonight's moon?"

"Full."

Hera chuckled in a resigned tone. "Of course it is."

"With the Moonshadow Elves at the height of their power, no defense will stand against them."

"Then we won't defend." Hera then says with determination. "We will attack. We must find them today, in the light of the sun, and stop them before it's too late."

Pipette chirps sadly.

Marcia's attacker jumps over the forest's terrain and uncovers their hood once they stops - revealing a young handsome male elf. He pulls out his blades and sighs, when he notices a red berry bush and gets lost in thought.

At the camp of the Moonshadow Assassins, where their leader Runaa meditates on a rock. The young male elf walks past her, with his blades drenched in the berry juice, which appears as blood.

"Well done, Raylis." Runaa complimented.

"Yeah. I used both of them." Raylis said nervously.

"I can see that." Runaa states the obvious. She tosses Raylis a piece of cloth, which he uses to clean his blade. He walks past the other elves while trying to fake a smile.

Back at Katolis, at a bakery, a portly middle-age woman named Barina lifts a sheet of jelly tarts out of the oven. Ezra and Bait crawl into the bakery through an open space. Ezra pushes the vent bars aside.

Bait croaked, Ezra tells her to be quiet.

Ezra sneaks into the room and watches Barina walk away. So the mischievous princess rushes over to the fresh jelly tart sheets and about to grab a piece.

"Prince Ezran!" A raspy voice shouted, startling Ezra who quickly turns to see Barina chuckling menacingly. "I caught you!"

"I was just admiring them."

"Oh, with your hands?" Barina asked, crossing her arms.

"Yeah, they look scrumptious."

"Yeah, they sure are." She said happily, proud of her work. Then she changes her tone, "And they're not for you! Or your little monster, Bait."

Bait snatches a jelly tart with her tongue.

"Did you just..." Barina stammered.

"You can tell by his eyes she's innocent." Ezra said. Bait bats her eyelashes innocently while croaking.

"Yeah, as innocent as my niece who made those exact same eyes." Barina quipped. Ezra takes a jelly tart while Barina focuses on Bait and is caught when Barina turns back around. "Are you kidding me? I'm standing right here." She said angrily.

Bait snatches three more jelly tarts and stuffs them into her mouth.

"Hey!" Barina shouted. Bait just croaks with drool running from her mouth, and then jumps off the table as Barina tries to grab her and escapes through the open door, chased by Barina. "Come back here!" Ezra grabs as many jelly tarts as she can hold and stuffs one inside her mouth before escaping through the vent.

Meanwhile, at the courtyard of the castle, Calla shows up for her training lessons. Training her is a girl slightly older than Calla. She has sandy blonde hair tied in a short ponytail. She wears armor like the other Crownguards and wields a wooden sword carved to resemble a real one.

"Princess Calla. Today we focus on the art of-" she tried to explain, but was cut off by Calla.

"Art!" Calla exclaimed, dropping her bag to the wrong. "Finally something I'm good at." She said with a smug smile, while placing her hands onto her hips. Her trainer gives her a judgmental look while crossing her arms. "Sorry, sorry. Won't interrupt again. Please continue... Sonja."

"The art of defense is critical in sword-fighting." Sonja leaps forward slightly and begins to swing her wooden sword at Calla, who takes a couple of steps back. "Parrying is about angle, motion, anticipation..." she pokes Calla's forehead with her sword. "Misjudge your opponent, and it's over."

Calla groans in pain and holds her forehead.

"You ready?" Sonja asks Calla, holding the sword out to her, then drops it into Calla's hands. But Calla fails to catch it and hurries to pick it up from the ground.

"Uh, I'm gonna have to say no." Calla said.

"Great." Sonja sighed, then turns away from Calla while pulling her own wooden sword "Let's do this."

Two guards stand at a stair railing, where one points towards the battle and the two start spectating.

Sonja swings her sword at Calla with ease while Calla struggles to parry. "Parry, parry, parry." Sonja droned, then stabs at Calla's chest, causing her to fall. "You're dead." Sonja resumes the swings as soon as Calla gets back up. "Parry, parry." Hits Calla on her head. "You're dead." Hits Calla again on her neck as soon as she tries to attack again. "Parry. Dead."

Calla rubs her head. "Really? Are you sure? Even if I was wearing armor?"

"Even if you were wearing the rarest legendary armor, forged by Sunfire Elves... Super dead."

Calla scoffs. "I'm terrible at this!"

"Yep." Sonja said as she helps Calla back up again. "But you have to practice anyway, because a princess must learn to defend herself." Sonja stated, then mutters. "Even a step-princess."

"What?" Calla said as she was picking up her sword.

"What?" Sonja repeated.

A handsome young man with short dark hair walks past the two while reading a book titled The Elf and the Maiden, catching the attention of both Sonja and Calla, who's mesmerized by the boy. They noticed he's unknowingly walking towards a nearby tree.

"Hey, your brother." Calla tells Sonja, pointing at the tree. "He's gonna walk right into that-"

"Shh." Sonja said, places a finger on Calla's mouth.

The two watch as the boy inches closer towards the tree, completely immersed into his book, until almost close enough to run into it.

"Claude!" Calla called out a panic.

"Huh?" Claude pulled himself from his book and notices the tree in front of him. Then he turns around to wave at Calla. "Oh. Hey, Calla!"

Calla waves back to Claude while smiling.

"Spoiled sport." Sonja said to Calla.

"Has that tree always been there?" Claude asked the girls, pointing at the tree.

"Well, yeah." Calla giggled. "For 300 years."

Claude chuckles and waves his hand, then sighs and sits down on a bench.

Then Calla turns to Sonja. "Hey, uh, can we try again? I think I can do it now."

Sonja and Calla take their places on the sparring grounds once more, equipped with their swords. The two parry successfully for a brief moment, when Calla screams and goes for a direct hit, but gets her sword caught underneath Sonja's foot. Calla tries to pull it out.

"What was that?" Sonja asked.

"I was, uh, trying to 'sweep the leg'?" Calla answered sheepishly.

"'Sweep the leg'? That's not a thing in sword-fighting." Sonja stated. Noticing Calla was distraacted, she looks over her shoulder towards her brother, who smiles back at her. "Oooooohhh, I see what's going on here." Sonja said with a wide grin, and releases Calla's sword. "Don't worry, girl, I'll help. You come at me this time."

Calla smiles, then yells and goes for another hit, pushing her sword towards Sonja's side.

"Oh, I am stabbed!" Sonja dramatically falls over and pretends to be in pain. "By the stab-princess! Lady Stabbington! Why? Spurt! Spurt!"

Calla smiles confidently and looks over at Claude.

"Nice work, Calla." Claude chuckled and sighs. "She deserves it."

"Prince Calla." A voice said from behind Calla. She turns around to see it was Odel, a bearded blue-eyed blond man and a respected member of Katolis's High Council. "The Queen needs to speak with you urgently."

Calla nods obediently.

"She didn't really stab me." Sonja said, holding up the wooden sword.

Queen Hera and the High Council are in the throne room, standing around the war table to discuss their next steps. Then they heard knocking on the door, opening it was Calla, and she and Ezra enter the room.

"Girls, girls, girls! Guess what?" Hera said excitedly as she approaches the children. "You're going on a trip." She raises her arms up. "To the Banther Lodge!"

"But... it's spring. That's the winter lodge." Calla said confusingly.

"Well, winter is coming... eventually." Hera said with a shrug.

"But what will we do? Everything fun there has to do with snow or ice." Ezra said.

"Maybe you can invent new versions using dirt and rocks. You could build a dirt man!" Hera turns to Ezra. "Or what about mud-sledding? That could be a thing!"

Bait respond with a croak, as if saying she's not looking forward to it.

Hera sighs and turns to Calla, placing her hands on Calla's shoulders. "Look, this is something I need you to do."

"But mom..." Ezra tried to protest.

"It's decided." Hera said sternly. "You'll leave before sundown, so go get packed up." She opens the door for the two.

"Yes, ma'am. Come on, Ez." Calla said obediently. She and Ezran walk out and Hera closes the door behind them.

"Why's she sending us away? Something's wrong, I know it." Ezra said with concern.

"Don't worry, everything's going to be fine. I'm sure of it." Calla assures Ezra. But as they walk away, Calla's expression is filled with the same worry as her sister.

Vira leads her children - Sonja and Claude - into her chambers, and closes the door behind her.

"What's going on, mother?" Sonja asked.

"We have visitors from Xadia... unwanted visitors." Vira said.

"What are they, minstrels or something?" Sonja joked.

"Assassins." Claude whispered to Sonja.

"I know that, genius!" Sonja said, hitting Claude's shoulder. "What else could it be?"

"Maybe for you, colorful prancing unicorns." Claude quipped.

"I haven't thought of them since I was little." Sonja scoffed. Claude glares at her skeptically.

"They've set up a secret camp somewhere near the base of the cliffs." Vira said. "Sonja, you will lead an attack."

"Okay. But... how exactly am I supposed to find their secret camp?" Sonja asked.

"These assassins are Moonshadow Elves. They draw power from the Moon." Vira said as she retrieves a wooden box from a nearby desk. "Inside this box is an Archangel Lunaris, a giant moon moth. It will be drawn to their energy. Follow it, and you will find them."

Sonja looks at the box and asked, "And what happens if I can't find them?"

"Then we may be on the brink of changing times." Vira said solemnly.

"You're saying they'll kill the queen?"

Vira angrily shushes her and looks out of the window, where Calla is walking and is then looking up. Vira quickly slams the window shut, an act which makes Calla more suspicious that there's more going on. Calla then sadly looks over to Ezra who is giggling joyfully while chasing Bait, knowing that Ezra's childhood might soon be over.

"Discretion, girl!" Vira scolded as she angrily hands Sonja the box. "Do you want to cause a panic?"

"I'm sorry, mom-" Sonja tried to apologized, but her mother just raises her hand dismissively.

"Just get out there and find them. Before sundown!" Vira ordered.

Sonja hated every time she disappointed her mother, for even the littlest things, but decided to suppressed those feelings since the fate of the kingdom is at stake.

Claude then spoke up. "So, if these are really Moonshadow Elves, then once the moon rises..."

"They'll be unstoppable." Vira warned.

"Well, I'm going to find a way to stop them." Claude said with determination. "After all, 'unstoppable' is just another kind of 'stoppable'."

"No. It's really not." Vira said in a deadpan tone.

"Yeah, it made more sense in my head." Claude said, and smiled sheepishly.

"I doubt it." Soria remarked. Which made Claude frown.

Later, Sonja and her men prepare to ride out on horses and are waiting at the gate. Sonja was examining the box her mother gave her when Calla stumbles towards them in armor, and carrying a sword and shield.

"Wait, I'm coming with you!" Calla said.

"Wow, you look terrific. But, just so you know, that's ceremonial armor. It's three times as heavy and half as strong. Ooohh, but so shiny!" Sonja said.

"I don't care." Calla said, as she puts the sword in the sheath, and sruggles to mount a horse. "I know what's going on and I'm coming with you."

"Do you now? Well you're just a kid, Calla."

Calla belly flops onto the back of the horse. "I'll be 15 in two months."

"Ooh, fourteen and three quarters! Wow!" Sonja said mockingly, while gazing at an apple in her hand.

"Five-sixths." Calla corrected, and manages to sit up-right. "Sonja, she's our queen. And she's my mother. It's my duty to help her."

"Well, your duty is to stay here in the castle where it's safe." Sonja said. "And technically she's your step-mom." She takes a bite out of her apple. "But I'm sure it's similar."

Calla growls mentally, she hates it every time Sonja brings up the fact that Calla and Hera aren't really related.

"Think fast!" Sonja yelled, quickly throwing her half-eaten apple at Calla. Distracted by her thoughts, Calla quickly raised her shield to block the apple, but due to the weight of the armor, the impact of the apple caused her to fall off her horse and right into a puddle of mud.

Sonja sighs and shakes her head. "You were supposed to catch it." She then waves her men to follow and they head out through the gate, with another soldier who hopped onto the horse Calla fell from.

Calla stares after them angrily. Out of frustration, she throws her shield into the mud, only for more mud to be splashed into her face, which she then wipes off and sighs.

At the Moonshadow elves' secret camp, they form a circle as Runaa gives her speech. "Four full moons past, on the eve of the Winter's Turn, the humans crossed into Xadia and murdered the Queen of the Dragons. Then they destroyed her only egg, the Dragon Princess."

Runaa's last sentence is more poignant for Raylis.

Runaa then wraps a binding around her arm. "Tonight we bind our lives to justice!"

"My breath for freedom!" Callista said, extending her arms.

"My eyes for truth!" Andromedus said, extending his arms.

"My strength for honor!" Skora said, extending her arm.

"My blood for justice!" Rama said, extending her arms.

"My heart for Xadia! Raylis said, extend his arms.

Runaa nods, then wraps the binding around the wrists of each assassin. "Life is precious. Life is valuable. We take it, but we do not take it lightly."

"Moon reflects sun, as death reflects life!" Raylis recited.

Runaa cuts the binding and it begins to glow around the arms of each assassin.

"When it is done, I will send a shadowhawk with a blood ribbon message to the King of the Dragons." Runaa said, holding a red-and-black arrow, then puts it in her quiver. "We strike when the moon is highest!"

The Moonshadow Assassins pass Runaa, as they prepare for tonight. Raylis walks up to her. "Uh, Runaa?"

"What is it, Raylis?"

"I was wondering... what if they know we're coming?" Raylis asked.

"We have the advantage of surprise. If we act fast, we will accomplish our goals without sacrifice." Runaa said, as she follows the rest of the elves. Unaware that Raylis is looking worried.

Ezra uncovers her eyes, then takes a bite out of jelly tart as she searches for Bait. She finds Bait inside a pile of clothes due to her glowing body and picks her up.

"Oh, Bait, you're terrible at hide and seek." Ezra laughed.

Ezra offers Bait a jelly tart, which is quickly snatched by her tongue. An upset-looking Calla enters the room. "Ez! What are you doing?"

"Hi, Calla." Ezra greeted, then offers her a jelly tart. "Do you want a-"

"No, I don't want a stupid jelly tart!" Calla angrily cuts her off. "Why aren't you packed? You know we have to get going soon."

"But you're not packed." Ezra pointed out.

"What do you think I'm doing?" Call said as she's stuffing items into her bag. Suddenly, she felt something sticky inside. She pulls out her favorite shirt stained by jelly tarts.

This made Ezra laughed. And that was the last straw, as Calla's pent-up anger at everything today comes spewing right out of her mouth.

"Don't you get it, Ezra?!" Calla tossed her shirt and dropped her bag, and walked towards Ezra. "Why do you think they're sending us away? Because they're coming to kill her!"

Ezra puts Bait down and storms out of the room upset, slamming the door behind her. Bait crawls after her and growls at Calla while turning red, then slams a tinier section of the door behind her as well. Calla sighs and sits down, resting her elbows on her legs. Then rests her head on her arms as tears were beginning to form in her eyes. "Why is this happening?" she thought.

Sonja and her men ride through the forest. Then she holds up the box her mother gave her in her hands.

"Let's see if this magic moon moth can find more than a closet full of moon sweaters." Sonja giggled. Then turns to a soldier on her left, thinking he didn't get the joke. "You know, 'cause moths eat clothes?"

"Yes, ma'am." The soldier deadpanned, mentally rolling his eyes.

Sonja opens the box and releases an Archangel Lunaris which sits on her hand as she examines it, before letting it fly.

"Let's go!" Sonja ordered. The group rides after the animal.

Back at the Moonshadow Assassin camp, Raylis sharpens his blade while Runaa drenches arrows in a poison fluid from a jar. The Archangel Lunaris lands on top of one of the arrows. Runaa examines it and, upon realization, jumps up while the Archangel Lunaris flies off. "They know we're here!"

The elves hear faint horse whines and trotting in the distance that is getting louder.

Runaa pulls her moon opal necklace from her neck, then crushes it in her hand, scattering the dust above the Moonshadow Assassins while whispering a magic spell, "Mystic-Arbora!"

Sonja's group arrives at the campsite, or at least where it should be. There's nothing. No evidence that anyone had settled in this area. Sonja dismounts from her horse to have a look around. It's definitely quiet.

The Archangel Lunaris flies in front of a disgruntled Sonja. "Nothing!" she scoffed, then lets the moth sit on her palm. "Surprising no one, a magic moth is just as worthless as a regular moth." She releases the moth, watching it fly onto a tree. "We'll have to wait for the elves to come to us." She mounts her horse once again and rides off.

As the rest of Sonja's men follow, Marcia took a last glance at the Archangel Lunaris on the tree. Noticing that it landed there for a long time. Then she motions her horse to catch up with the other soldiers.

The Archangel Lunaris then flutters off the tree in panic as it transforms back into Raylis. The other Moonshadow Assassins reappear around him as their disguise wears off, glaring at him angrily.

"You lied to me." Runaa said angrily at Raylis. "You let her go!"

"Runaa, I'm sorry!" Raylis apologized. "The human, she looked up at me and I saw the fear in her eyes."

"Of course she was afraid. But you had a job to do!" Runaa argued.

"She didn't even do anything to me! How could I possibly take her life?" Raylis countered.

"You let her live, but you've killed us all!"

Raylis widens his eyes in shock, realizing what his reluctance has cost them. No sacrifice indeed.

Author's Notes:

I was considering whether or not to have the entire series (so far) in one story. But I decided to split them into seasons (or "Books") like in the series.

The reason for the title change of this episode/chapter is because upon writing this, I realize the show's episode title has a double meaning, referring to the King of the Dragon.

Speaking of which, it seems to make sense for the Queen of the Dragons to be the dominant one, since the females of any animals are usually the more deadly ones.

I made Sonja a little more mean-spirited here, since girls tend to be more spiteful towards each other. As Family Guy would attest.

In the episode, Claudia was reading Love Amongst The Dragons, which sounds like love story. Here, I had Claud read a different book, something that might sound more interesting for a boy.

Just a heads-up, it may take a long while for new chapters will be posted. Partly because of how many episodes there are, and partly because I'll be watching the upcoming season 4, and mostly because I'm working on other fanfics too.

As of that, I might put a few hints and foreshadowing more obvious than in the show. But I'll try not to spoil anything, ESPECIALLY from season 4. Though those who have already watched the first three seasons might be able to pick up a few things.

Feel free to give me some suggestions. Especially good names for other genderbend characters.
